Actions do not stain me, nor do I covet fruits of action. One who knows me in this manner is never bound by actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, Shri Krishna clarified and elaborated upon key topics within karmayoga. First he gave the paramparaa or tradition of the teaching. He then revealed his nature as Ishvaraa, and explained the method by which he manifests as an avataara. Finally, he explained how he responds in the exact manner that one approaches him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krishna says that karma cannot disturb me. Not only karma cannot disturb me; karma phalam also cannot disturb me; karma also can give tension; and karma phalam can give regrets or disappointments; so both are not there for me; therefore Krishna says: karmas do not affect me; by creating tension; anxiety. And not only that; I do not have even the concern over the results of action. So I am not concerned about the result of action; because every action is going to create an appropriate result; and the Lord will never do any injustice to me, because as they say: I always get what I deserve; never what I desire. Therefore Lord is always just and therefore whatever has to happen according to karma, it will happen; therefore I am not concerned about the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we get further into karmayoga, we slowly begin to lost our attachment to the fruits of our action, which is the first stage in karmayoga. In this chapter, Shri Krishna urges us to move to the next stage in this journey where we begin to lose the notion of doership.To highlight this point, Shri Krishna says that as Ishvaraa, even he knows that actions are happening in prakriti, and therefore he is not the doer of those actions, but he is beyond all action. He puts this poetically by saying that actions do not “stain” him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is Ishvara beyond all action? At its core, any action happens when there is an imbalance or vacuum. Wind travels from high pressure areas to low pressure areas. Electric current moves when there is a difference in voltage. The mind creates a thought because of our vaasanaas. But Ishvara is all-complete and self-sufficient. Therefore, he does not need to act. He is only a witness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pure personalities are never tainted by defects even in contact with impure situations and entities, like the sun, the fire, and the Ganges.\u201d The sun does not get tainted if sunlight falls on a puddle of urine. The sun retains its purity, while also purifying the dirty puddle. Similarly, if we offer impure objects into the fire, it still retains its purity\u2014the fire is pure, and whatever we pour into it also gets purified. In the same manner, numerous gutters of rainwater merge into the holy Ganges, but this does not make the Ganges a gutter\u2014the Ganges is pure and in transforms all those dirty gutters into the holy Ganges. Similarly, since actions are performed by prakriti, there is no impact to Ishvaraa. Shri Krishna reminds us that just like he knows that he is not the doer or enjoyer of actions, so should we have the exact same conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Activities bind one in karmic reactions when they are performed with the mentality of enjoying the results. However, God\u2019s actions are not motivated by selfishness; his every act is driven by compassion for the souls. Therefore, although he administers the world directly or indirectly, and engages in all kinds of activities in the process, he is never tainted by any reactions. Lord Krishna states here that he is transcendental to the fruitive reactions of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Material activities never taint the devotees of God who are fully satisfied in serving the dust of his lotus feet. Nor do material activities taint those wise sages who have freed themselves from the bondage of fruitive reactions by the power of Yog. So where is the question of bondage for the Lord himself who assumes his transcendental form according to his own sweet will?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So here incidentally we have to note, planning for the result is one thing; worrying over the result is another. Vedanta is never against planning; planning is extremely important; without planning you cannot do anything. Planning leads to efficiency, worrying leads to deficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
