Four classes have been created by me, based on the division of guna and action. Even though I created them, know me as the non-doer and imperishable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Shri Krishna mentioned that humans cannot avoid action at any cost. So how can we achieve liberation from bondage while still performing action? To that end, Shri Krishna advises us to act per our svadharma. By efficiently performing svadharma, we can liberate ourselves while performing actions. This is the “why” of karmayoga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord has given the scriptures in the form of ved\u0101s. So Bhagav\u0101n has talked about two types of goals, spiritual and materialistic; Bhagav\u0101n has talked about two types of paths also; karma marga and j\u00f1\u0101na marga; Bhagav\u0101n has talked about the seekers’ also; in the form of human beings. Normally spiritual and material ends are diagonally opposite; but Bhagavan says I have to design a unique lifestyle by which a person can accomplish both material-end and spiritual-end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Knowing that one should perform one’s svadharma or duty in this world is core to karmayoga. But how does one know what is one’s svadharma? Shri Krishna addresses this point briefly in this shloka. He says that human beings are categorized into four classes or varnaas. These classes are based on the 3 gunaas, and the corresponding action that each guna prompts us to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vedic philosophy explains this variety in a more scientific manner. It states that the material energy is constituted of three gu\u1e47as (modes): sattva gu\u1e47a (mode of goodness), rajo gu\u1e47a (mode of passion), and tamo gu\u1e47a (mode of ignorance). The Brahmins are those who have a preponderance of the mode of goodness. They are predisposed toward teaching and worship. The Kshatriyas are those who have a preponderance of the mode of passion mixed with a smaller amount of the mode of goodness. They are inclined toward administration and management. The Vaishyas are those who possess the mode of passion mixed with some mode of ignorance. Accordingly, they form the business and agricultural class. Then there are the Shudras, who are predominated by the mode of ignorance. They form the working class. This classification was neither meant to be according to birth, nor was it unchangeable. Shree Krishna explains in this verse that the classification of the Var\u1e47\u0101\u015bhram system was according to people\u2019s qualities and activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will find that we will fall into one of these four categories. A brahmana who is predisposed to gaining knowledge, faith, sharing knowledge will usually have a prominence of sattva. A kshatriya who demonstrates courage, likes to organize and protect people, face challenges, take risks, try new things will have a prominence of sattva and rajas. A vaishya who likes to be creative and produce something will have a prominence of rajas and tamas. A shudra who likes to execute tasks but requires a lot of motivation will have prominence of tamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vedas classify people into four categories of occupations, not according to their birth, but according to their natures. In society we are seeing people are doing work as teacher, soldier, shopkeeper, advoate etc. Etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the purpose of the discipline is not said; it is like a sugar coated pill. similarly v\u0113d\u0101s prescribe the disciple, without telling what is purpose. And you know the beauty; if you fulfil your materialistic desires, following the V\u0113dic disciple, then the beauty is that gratually you get out of these materialist desires, without suppression; and in that place, you discover spiritual desire as the most natural one; and you discover that desire to such an extent that the pursuit of spiritual desire is not to be considered as a denial of materialistic desires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 As we can tell, this shloka was heavily misinterpreted to support the incorrect notion that varna is determined by birth. There is no such thing. Just like we have career counselling in modern times, the Gita offered a scientific manner of selecting a career that is suitable for oneself both from a practical perspective, and also from a karma yoga perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 In the second part of the shloka, Shri Krishna reminds us that although he has set up this classification of varnaa, he is not the doer even in this act. It is maayaa alone that is acting in this world, whereas he is only the witness to its actions. We can think of ourselves as playing different parts in a cosmic play. Each part is different based on our svadharma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
