Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My birth and action are divine. One who knows this in essence, having given up the body, is not born again; he obtains me, O Arjuna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the last two shlokas, Shri Krishna gave the reason for his avataara. Now the question arises: how does this knowledge help the spiritual seeker? He says that once we understand the secret of Ishvaraa’s birth and action, we will understand the secret of our action as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the secret of Ishvaraa’s birth and action? It looks to us that Ishvaraa is born, and that Ishvaraa performs action. But that is not the case. Through the power of Ishvaraa’s Maaya, it only looks like Ishvaraa takes birth and performs action. It is just an illusion. As we have seen earlier, the eternal essence does not perform action or take birth, only prakriti – also called maaya – performs action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krishna comes back to our discussion, which is mok\u1e63a\u1e25 marga\u1e25 i.e. liberation. Liberation means knowing the nature of God, also leads to liberation; God realisation can give liberation. Self- realisation and God- realisation are identical; they are two names but it is only one. To give an example, when a wave knows its true nature, what is the realization? the true nature of the wave is water, therefore wave- realisation is realizing the true nature of the wave, which is water. And what is ocean- realisation; it is again knowing the true nature of the ocean and what is the true nature of ocean; water. if a person says, I know God but not the Self or I know the Self and not God, what does it mean? It means he knows neither God nor Self. The one who really understands the Lord,  tattvata\u1e25 gyani in its true nature, what will happen to him, that person does not take a body again after death; which means he will attain liberation. So the knowledge of real Krishna will lead to liberation; that is why if you read Shrimad Bh\u0101gavatham puaranm and all, you will find that the Gopis initially worshipped Krishna as a person, cowherd boy, as a beautiful person, and their attraction is Krishna’s \u015bar\u012bram; that is all wonderful; that bhakthi is required. When Krishna was a person, they had problems also; when Krishna appears, they will be happy; and when Krishna disappears, they will be unhappy; Gopika Gitam; Gitam means crying; bhagavatham. They cried in Raga. That is the difference, when Gopis cry it will be in r\u0101gam, and when we cry it will not be in r\u0101gam; but whether you cry, whatever be the reason, crying is a crying; the Lord comes and goes; but the very same Gopis, later describe Krishna as Krishna now we know who you really are: you are not the son of Gopika nanadana na; (that is all fun), who is real Krishna; akhilam dehinam antaratma druk; you are the inner consciousness behind all the bodies; and why you have taken this body; because devotees wanted, you have just temporarily taken a mayika \u015bar\u012bram; for blessing the world, but we know, that \u015bar\u012bram is not your real nature. This knowledge is called tatva j\u00f1\u0101nam. And one who has got that tatva j\u00f1\u0101nam he will attain liberation. And he will become one with Me, after death; he will have brahma nirvanam or he will have \u012b\u015bvara aikyam;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devotion can either be toward the formless aspect of God or toward his personal form. Devotion toward the formless is intangible and nebulous to most people. They find nothing to focus upon or feel connected with during such devotional meditation. Devotion to the personal form of God is tangible and simple. Such devotion requires divine sentiments toward the personality of God. For people to engage in devotion to Shree Krishna, they must develop divine feelings toward his names, form, virtues, pastimes, abode, and associates. For example, people purify their minds by worshipping stone deities because they harbor the divine sentiments that God resides in these deities. Now, the jeeva within us is identified with the body, mind and intellect. Its birth is based on past karmaas. It performs karmaas with a sense of doership. In other words, it thinks that it is performing actions. But from the standpoint of the eternal essence, there is no doership or enjoyership. It is prakriti alone that acts. Just like Ishvaraa does not perform action, the jeeva also does not perform action. The jeeva is one with Ishvaraa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So therefore, one who truly and completely understands this point will drop identification with his body, and begin identifying with the eternal essence. That is what is meant by the phrase “deham tvaktvaa”: the jeeva has stopped identification of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, academic knowledge is not enough. We need a first-hand understanding that prakriti performs actions and not the eternal essence. That first-hand understanding can only be gained through meditation, which is explained later in the Gita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A simple way to understand the teaching so far is as follows. The individual jeeva is like a wave in the ocean. Ishvaraa is like the ocean. The eternal essence or brahman is water. Once the wave realizes that it is the same water as Ishvaraa, it is free from the limitations of its tiny form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
