Shree Bhagavaan said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You and I have have undergone many births, O Arjuna. I know all of those (births), but you do not know them, O scorcher-of-foes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By way of answering Arjuna’s question, Lord Krishna is introducing the topic of avathara, which is an unique concept in vedic tradition; avathara is Lord’s incarnation, which Krishna points out is different from human birth. When a human being is born, we call it birth or janma; but when Lord appears in the creation, we call it avathara; and Krishna wants to say here that there are a lot of differences between janma and avath\u0101ra; birth and incarnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This verse has been spoken by Shree Krishna to refute foolish people who doubt that he is not God.\u201d Non-believers argue that Shree Krishna too was born like the rest of us, and he ate, drank, slept, like we all do, and so he could not have been God. Here, Shree Krishna emphasizes the difference between the soul and God by stating that although he descends in the world innumerable times, he still remains omniscient, unlike the soul whose knowledge is finite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the case of a birth of a jiva; it is caused by ignorance. It is avidya or ignorance, the problem of ego; and because of the problem of ego or ahamkara, there is the problem of karma and because of the problem of karma, there is the problem of pu\u1e47yam and papam; and because of the problem of the pu\u1e47yam and papam, there is a janma; therefore the janma of a jiva is because of ignorance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly the very cause of manu\u1e63ya janma and i\u015bvara avathara are different; at the cause level itself, there is a difference. So k\u0101ra\u1e47a bheda\u1e25 is there; and secondly the very nature of manu\u1e63ya janma and \u012b\u015bvara avath\u0101ra, there is a difference; svarupams are different; their natures are different; and<\/strong> thirdly the very purpose of manu\u1e63ya janma and \u012b\u015bvara avath\u0101ra are different; and therefore k\u0101rya bheda\u1e25; uddesa bheda\u1e25 are there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus there are three basic differences; kara\u1e47a bheda\u1e25; svarupa bheda\u1e25; and udde\u015ba bheda\u1e25 Shri Krishna responds by pointing out the similarity as well as the difference between his birth and Arjuna’s birth. The similarity is that both Arjuna and Shri Krishna have taken many births in the past. The individual soul and the Supreme Soul, God, have many similarities\u2014both are sat- chit- anand (eternal, sentient, and blissful). However, there are also many differences. God is all-pervading, while the soul only pervades the body it inhabits; God is all-powerful, while the soul does not even have the power to liberate itself from Maya without God\u2019s grace; God is the creator of the laws of nature, while the soul is subject to these laws; God is the upholder of the entire creation, while the soul is upheld by him; God is all-knowing, while the soul does not have complete knowledge even in one subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the difference is that Shri Krishna had the knowledge and memory of all his prior births, whereas Arjuna did not. Normally, human beings have such strong identification with their body that it restricts their ability to remember what occurred in another body. We even tend to forget events associated with our own body with the passage of time, including simple things like where we kept our keys in the morning. Jiva janma is ajnanat, I\u015bvara avathara is jnanat; since the jiva janma is because of ignorance, it is called fall, since i\u015bvara avath\u0101ra is because of knowledge, it is called descendence, avathara means coming down out of compassion. It is compassion-based; knowledge-based, conscious, deliberate descendence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if Shri Krishna could recall what happened in all his births, he did not have any identification to his body, and therefore he is not restricted by its limitations. He was speaking as an enlightened being who realized the eternal essence and has dropped identification with his body. But there is more to Shri Krishna than just this aspect. He will reveal more in the next shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. How does the Gita treat the topic of rebirth? Our vaasanaas force us to take a birth in a body. If we chose to use the birth to exhaust those vaasanaas, then the cycle of rebirth is broken. But if we chose to use the birth to accumulate more vaasanaas, then we will be forced to take another birth to exhaust the newly acquired vaasanaas.
