Arjuna said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your birth is in the present, and the sun’s birth was in the past. How should I understand that you had taught this (yoga) in the beginning?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So in the previous three verses, Krishna had talked about the glory of the G\u012bt\u0101; the glory is that it is the condensed v\u0113dic wisdom; that is why it is called sm\u1e5bti\u1e25; the original scripture the v\u0113d\u0101 is called \u015bruti\u1e25; because it is heard by the \u1e5b\u1e63\u012bs during their meditation; it was heard from the Lord; heard means internally heard; not the gross sound, but they heard; and therefore they are called \u015brutis. And all the other scriptures are whatever has been learned from the v\u0113d\u0101s by the r\u0325\u1e63\u012bs; that v\u0113dic wisdom, they remembered, they chewed and they gave out the same wisdom, which is well digested; the \u1e5b\u1e63\u012bs put in their mouth, chewed well. Sm\u1e5bti\u1e25 means that which is remembered by the \u1e5b\u1e63\u012bs and represented; and that G\u012bt\u0101 is sm\u1e5bti\u1e25 is the glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjun is puzzled by the apparent incongruity of events in Shree Krishna\u2019s statement. The Sun god has been present since almost the beginning of creation, while Shree Krishna has only recently been born in the world.  Arjuna had a doubt how could Shri Krishna have revealed this knowledge to the sun? If Shree Krishna is the son of Vasudev and Devaki, then shri Krishna was only a little older than Arjuna, so how does one reconcile this fact?That his statement, he taught this science to Vivasvan, the Sun god appears inconsistent to Arjun, and he inquires about it. Arjun\u2019s question invites an exposition on the concept of the divine descension of God, and Shree Krishna responds to it in the subsequent verses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, Arjuna requested Shri Krishna to clarify this point. Even the way he asked this question is very beautiful. He could easily have said “I don’t believe you, how is this possible”. Instead, he very humbly says “my mind cannot understand this point, please help me understand it”. There is no accusation or finger pointing of any sort here. It is asked with sincerity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjuna does not totally negate Krishna, because he has got faith in the Guru; therefore he only asked for clarification. This is Arjuna’s question and for which Krishna gives the answer from verse No.5 to 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This question enables Shri Krishna to reveal his true identity to Arjuna in the next shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
