Then the valiant Bheeshma, elder of the Kuru dynasty, blew his conch loudly, a sound as mighty as the roar of a lion, delighting Duryodhana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first verse in a series of verses which indicate the beginning of the Mahabharata war. Traditionally, conches were blown to announce the start of the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bhi\u1e63macarya made a huge roar of a lion to create, generate enthusiasm or confidence and thereafterwards Bhi\u1e63macarya did not want to delay the commencement of the war. Because, the more the delay is the more the butterfly in the stomach. You all know. The more the delay the more the butterfly and therefore Bhi\u1e63ma decided to blow the conch signaling the commencement of the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore it is like the whistle indicating the beginning. So therefore both the armies are important, but Bh\u012b\u1e63m\u0101 being the eldest in both the armies, therefore Bhi\u1e63ma decides to blow the conch first indicating their preparedness for the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This also conveyed to Duryodhana that Bheeshma was ready to lead the Kaurava army and he would fight dutifully and spare no pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bheeshma is also sensing the fear in Duryodhana, so by blewing his conch so that Duryodhana felt confident that his army was still on his side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also indicates the dependence of Duryodhana’s ego on external circumstances, such as the roar of conches, in order to strengthen itself, instead of an innate belief that his army was on his side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
