In this manner, I have declared that knowledge to you which is most secret among all secrets. Reflect on this fully, then do as you desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mystery is knowledge which is beyond the reach of most people. Most of the laws of physics were secret until a few centuries ago and many still remain secret. Spiritual knowledge is profound and cannot be obtained through direct perception. It needs to be learned through the Guru and the scriptures. Therefore, it is described as secret. In the second chapter Sri Krishna revealed the knowledge of the soul, which is guhya or secret knowledge. In the seventh and eighth chapters He explained the knowledge of His powers, which is guhyatar or more secret. In the ninth and subsequent chapters He revealed the knowledge of His devotion, which is guhyatam or most secret. In verse 55 of the present chapter, He explained that He can be known in His personal form only through devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here Krishna says: Arjuna I am not going to decide for you. My aim is educating you and not to command you; and therefore, etat a\u015be\u1e63e\u1e47a vim\u1e5b\u015bya; whatever I have taught you analyse; and you find out where you stand in spiritual ladder; because the decision will depend upon the level the spiritual level of the person; until citta \u015buddhi, karma is important. After citta \u015buddhi, one has to gradually reduce karma; whether I should do more karma, or more v\u0113d\u0101ntic study; is not a uniform advice, since the level of the student vary; one person should increase the karma whereas the other should decrease the karma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have come across the word “iti” several times in the Gita discourse. It is always used to conclude a chapter, and also to conclude a major theme or topic. Here, Shri Krishna uses this word to inform Arjuna that the Gita discourse has concluded with this shloka. We have to note that the Gita is but one portion of the Mahabharata epic. So the shlokas that follow this one are used to summarize the main teaching, and to link back to the conversation between Sanjaya and Dhritarashtra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna also emphasizes the most secret aspect of this text. We have to understand the implication of the word secret here carefully. The Gita is by no means an exclusive text. There are several commentaries, including this one, that are freely available on the web. Most people will not approach the Gita due to their preconceived notions. Some think it is outdated; some think it is impractical and so on. Only a few people are interested in the Gita, and of those, fewer still are willing to understand and change their approach to life based on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This free will to choose from the available options is given to the soul by God. Freedom of choice is not infinite. One cannot decide, \u201cI want to be the most intelligent person in the world.\u201d Our choices are limited by our past and present actions. However, we do have a certain amount of free will, because we are not machines in the hands of God. Sometimes people question that if God had not given us free-will we would not do any bad deed. But then we would not be able to do any good either. The opportunity to do good always comes with the danger of doing evil. More importantly, God wants us to love Him, and love is possible only when there is a choice. A machine cannot love because it has no freedom of choice. God has created us with free will and has given us choices so that we can choose them and thus show our love to Him. Even the Almighty God cannot force the soul to love and submit to Him; this decision has to be made by the soul itself.  Here, Krishna is drawing Arjuna’s attention to his free will and asking him to make a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For any spiritual teaching to have an impact on our lives, it has to go through three steps. Shravana is actively listening to the text through a qualified teacher. Manana is reflection on the teaching, with a view to resolve all doubts or gaps in logic. Nidhidhyaasana is meditation and constant contemplation, with a view to assimilate that teaching completely. Many seekers are enthusiastic listeners, but they make the mistake of skipping the second step. In doing so, they are not able to see the value of the teaching in their own lives. Shri Krishna stresses the importance of reflection to Shri Krishna. He also gives Arjuna the freedom to apply the teaching based on this understanding born of out of reflection, instead of taking it at face value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
