Always engaging even in all actions, one who considers me as his refuge, through my grace attains that eternal, imperishable state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the previous verse, Shree Krishna explained that through bhakti the devotees enter into full awareness of him. Equipped with it, they see everything in its connection with God. They see their body, mind, and intellect as the energies of God; they see their material possessions as the property of God; they see all living beings as parts and parcels of God; and they see themselves as his tiny servants. In that divine consciousness, they do not give up work, rather they renounce the pride of being the doers and enjoyers of work. They see all work as devotional service to the Supreme, and they depend upon him for its performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjuna, after having heard the final message of the Gita discourse, would probably have had felt quite dejected and sad, like many of us. Unless one gave up all actions, took up a life of a monk, lived in a secluded place and contemplated constantly upon the eternal essence, liberation is not possible. How many of us, who are currently quite entrenched in the world, can see ourselves taking up a path of monkhood? It is next to impossible. We may begin to think that the Gita is not for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anticipating this frustration, Shri Krishna brought the discourse back to Arjuna’s level, as it were. Arjuna, like us, was not in a state to renounce his actions and retire to a state of monkhood. Shri Krishna reassured Arjuna that liberation is absolutely possible for such people. It is because of one key point. Whether one continues to act in this world, or takes up renunciation, liberation is entirely up to the grace of Ishvara. We can make all the preparations we want to fall asleep, but ultimately, whether or not we fall asleep is not in our hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, upon leaving their body, they go to the divine abode of God. Just as the material realm is made from the material energy, the divine realm is made from the spiritual energy. Hence, it is free from the defects of material nature and is perfect in every way. It is sat-chit-\u0101nand i.e., full of eternality, knowledge, and bliss. Regarding his divine realm, Shree Krishna had said in verse 15.6: \u201cNeither the sun nor the moon, nor fire can illumine that Supreme Abode of Mine. Having gone There, one does not return to this material world again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Bhagavad Gita, while performing work according to one’s caste, it is said to offer its fruits to God. Arjuna has been asked to perform his duty i.e. war with a detached attitude, rather than to renounce it out of fear in the battlefield. This very feeling of work is also Gyan Yoga, that how can we contribute to the welfare of the world. How can we increase our quality. It is true that in the illusion of nature, whatever a living being considers his own, ends with the body. Therefore, the knowledge by which a living being is able to recognize his existence and the knowledge by listening, thinking and meditating on which a living being gets the knowledge of his ego, is called Gyan Yoga. Due to the separation of the living being from Brahma, first the ego of Mahant i.e. “I” is created, then through the intellect it gets connected to the feeling of doer and enjoyer. While performing work, he gets to know the same by self-purification and by supreme devotion through Gyan Yoga. Therefore, he again abandons the ego and while performing work by being devoted to God, attains salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 So then, having known this, Arjuna, who had temporarily given up hope of attaining the shaashvata avyaya padam, the eternal and imperishable state of liberation, regained his interest in the discourse. Shri Krishna now began winding up the entire Gita, by summarizing its key aspects from a very practical standpoint. The simple practical advice given here is to continue performing our duty, not to worry too much if we inadvertently perform a prohibited action, and to consider Ishvara as the one and only one aashraya, the ultimate refuge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
