On whom has given up egoism, force, arrogance, desire, anger, possessions, free from mineness, and serene, is fit for becoming the eternal essence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the monk has decided to focus on contemplation upon the self, he should take care to not harbour tendencies or traits that are remnants of life in the material world. Shri Krishna enumerates those traits in this shloka, beginning with ahankaara or egoism. Egoism refers to the notion of I-ness in anything that is in the realm of Prakriti. For most people, their body is their self. For some others, it is the intellect. Even if these are temporary, they will become obstacles in meditation. A similar obstacle is the sense of mine-ness or mamataa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ego and its lust for power and prestige are dissolved. Constantly engaging the mind in transcendence, the yogi is tranquil and free from the bonds of desire, anger, and greed. Such a yogi attains realization of the Absolute Truth as Brahman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaama refers to desire and passion, and balam or force refers to power of desire and passion. If these is not checked, then the mind will always rush towards some object or the other and do so with an intensity that is hard to control. Darpam is arrogance, which makes one feel that he is above others, and therefore, can do whatever he wants. This will prevent the monk from following a strict regimen of meditation. Another obstacle in meditation is parigrah, the sense of possessing or hoarding things, which can distract the monk from pursuing his path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Over coming from the human weakness is important and essential characteristic for getting liberalisation and during the practice of the v\u0113d\u0101ntic meditation, several emotional disturbances can happen. They do happen and if they happen it is because of the traces of \u0101suri sampath, which we have enumerated in the 16th chapter of the G\u012bt\u0101. So, Krishna talked about certain traits which will disturb the mind and therefore they have to be weed them out. In the \u015b\u0101stra, it is called durv\u0101sana k\u1e63ya\u1e25; So certain unhealthy patterns of thinking will certainly disturb the mind and therefore you have to carefully weed them out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now to clean ourselves from weeds, how many minutes, people want crash programmes, because people are in a hurry. Infact it is not minutes or hours or days, weeks or months, we have identified with the body for how many decades and how many births? Therefore, I am the body notion is so entrenched deep into the mind and therefore if I have to de-condition my mind, it requires lot of time.  That is why in the 6th chapter, Bhagav\u0101n said that tirelessly one has to practice nidhidhy\u0101sanam. In fact, if you ask, \u015aankar\u0101c\u0101rya will go one step further and he will say, drop everything and take sany\u0101sa and do nidhidhy\u0101sana. Shrikrishna is not asking too much from you; you need not go to that extent; but as often as possible, dwell upon the teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, when the monk has done his best to remove all notions of I and mine from his mind, ensured that his surroundings are calm and free of distractions, ensured that likes and dislikes are conquered, convinced himself that the world is nothing but a collection of names and forms, he gets the wonderful reward in the form of serenity or shaantihi. He recognizes his true self as the shuddha saakshi, the pure witness, free from identification from the mind or body. He is now ready for resting in, which is the same as becoming, the eternal essence, brahman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
