One’s duty, though devoid of merits, is superior to another’s duty well performed. Doing the duty prescribed for one’s nature, one does not incur sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The normal tendency of human mind is when it has taken to one type of profession, it always compares that profession with the other profession. Human mind tends to compare; not only profession; anything whether it is dress or food or house or anything we tend to compare. And always it appears the other one is better than what I have. Distant pastures are greener; there is also an English proverb. Therefore, our tendency is to think that the other profession is better. When I take to br\u0101hma\u1e47a karma, K\u1e63atriy\u0101, vai\u015bya, \u015b\u016bdra karma will appear better, when I take to K\u1e63atriy\u0101, the others will appear better. Krishna says do not compare and keep on changing; You will never perfection in any field; and therefore, try for perfection; in whatever you have taken. Therefore, he says, for you the best profession is your profession; whatever profession you have taken to. Learn to look at it as the best and you can excel in any field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We now focus on the subject of svadharma, which is the set of actions termed as duty. As we saw earlier, our duty can only be understood by conducting self-analysis to understand what our mental makeup, what our varna is. Some of us may be well suited for starting businesses, whereas some of us may be better suited for the service sector. But it is quite common to get enchanted by another person\u2019s occupation since it generates more money, since it has glamour and fame, and so on. How should we deal with this situation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna says that we should stick to performing our svadharma, no matter how profitable or how glamourous other occupations seem like. In the short term, if we pick up another occupation, it may seem like we are doing a great job. But in the long run, we will fall into trouble. We will run into some problem or the other on account of not being suitable for someone else\u2019s occupation. We also would deprive society from giving it the level of service possible if we had stuck with what we are good at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, if we abandon our duties thinking them to be defective, and take up another\u2019s duties unsuitable for our nature, we struggle against the innate inclination of our personality. This was exactly Arjun\u2019s situation. His Kshatriya nature was inclined to military and administrative activities. Events drove him to a situation where it was necessary to participate in a war of righteousness. If he were to shirk from his duty and withdraw from the battlefield to practice austerities in the forest, it would not help him spiritually, for even in the forest, he would not be able to get away from his inherent nature. In all likelihood, he would gather the tribal people in the jungle and become their king. Instead, it would be better for him to continue doing his duty born of his nature, and worship God by offering the fruits of his works to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must keep doing our prescribed occupational duties as long as the taste for devotion through hearing, chanting, and meditating on the leelas of God has not developed.\u201d \u015ahr\u012bmad Bh\u0101gavatam<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harbouring likes and dislikes towards actions, preferring someone else’s occupation to ours, has the effect of strengthening the ego, and hence should be avoided. Furthermore, in karma yoga, we are only expected to perform our best actions, and to not worry about the result. By performing our svadharma, by doing the best we can, we automatically the fear of the consequence of our action, whether or not it will be a merit or a sin. To perform actions fearlessly is a blessing in itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
