Agriculture, cattle rearing and trade are natural duties of the vaishya. Service oriented actions are the natural duties of the shoodra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna now describes the duties of the vaishya and shoodra varnas. The mental makeup of vaishyas prods them to raise, invest and trade in capital, goods and services. Although the shloka mentions agriculture, cattle rearing and trade, the broader concern of vaishyas is money. They are guided by the economic motive behind all their actions. Vaishyas play a critical role in any society by starting and maintaining the engine of the economy. They ensure that the needs of society are met by providing what it needs at the right place, time and for the right price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vaishyas were those whose natures were predominantly r\u0101jasic with a mixture of tamo gu\u1e47a. They were thus inclined toward producing and possessing economic wealth through business and agriculture. They sustained the economy of the nation and created jobs for the other classes. They were also expected to undertake charitable projects to share their wealth with the deprived sections of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there are people who do not have leadership qualities. They cannot lead, they can only follow. They will do what they are told; not one thing more. They are the unskilled people, and they are called \u015b\u016bdra\u1e25 by character; we are not talking about birth here; that \u015b\u016bdra\u1e25 gu\u1e47a whoever has got; since he does not have leadership, let him serve the other three groups of people. Either do service to a br\u0101hma\u1e47a in his br\u0101hma\u1e47a profession; when he does a big yaga he requires assistance, be an assistant, or be an assistant to a K\u1e63atriy\u0101, or be an assistant to a vai\u015bya; that is \u015b\u016bdra\u1e25 karma. That is paricarya; paricarya means service in which decision making is not involved; decision making is not that easy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Shudras were those who possessed t\u0101masic natures. They were not inclined toward scholarship, administration, or commercial enterprise. The best way for their progress was to serve society according to their calling. Artisans, technicians, job-workers, tailors, craftsmen, barbers, etc. were included in this class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shoodras comprise the service sector. They pursue occupations where they can serve society in an individual capacity. They have a lower tolerance for risk as compared to kshatriyas and vaishyas, since the proportion of rajas is lower. Therefore, they prefer to work in occupations where they render their services to society and in return, are compensated for their services appropriately. Like any other varna, their natural inclination to do a certain type of work is enhanced by gaining the right skills and training needed to perform their tasks well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We should refrain from harbouring any notion that one varna is better than the other. The human body itself is said to be made up of four varnas. The mind is a braahmana, the hands are kshatriyas, the thighs are vaishyas and the legs are shoodras. The body cannot function properly if any component is malfunctioning. Similarly, society cannot function when one varna does not perform its natural duties. Societies that encourage each individual to realize their full potential tend to flourish. With this shloka, Shri Krishna concludes the description of the four varnas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
