Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our jnyaanam, our knowledge, gives us an object to pursue, person to approach, or situation to create. Now it is up to our buddhi, our intellect, to decide the course of action. Typically, for any objective, we need to decide whether or not we want to pursue the objective, and if we do, how should we go about doing it. Shri Krishna says that a saattvic intellect, a saattvic buddhi is one that is clear on those two factors. In fact, Shri Krishna breaks the two factors down into four assessments: assessing one’s stage in life and one’s svadharma first, then whether an action is one’s duty or not, then whether to be fearful or not, and lastly, whether to continue to act or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mode of goodness illumines the intellect with the light of knowledge thereby refining its ability to discriminate the right and wrong of things, actions, and sentiments. The s\u0101ttvic intellect is one that makes known to us what type of action is to be performed and what type of action is to be renounced, what is to be feared and what is to be ignored. It explains to us the reason for the shortcomings in our personality and reveals the solution for them. To make proper choices, a developed faculty of discrimination is required. The Bhagavad Gita itself was spoken to Arjun to equip him with the power of discrimination. At the outset, Arjun was confused about his duty. His inordinate attachment to his relatives had bewildered his judgment regarding proper and improper action. Feeling weak and fearful, and in utter confusion, he had surrendered to the Lord and requested him to enlighten him regarding his duty. Through the divine song of wisdom, Lord Krishna helped Arjun develop his power of discrimination, until he finally concluded: \u201cI have explained to you the knowledge that is more secret than all secrets. Ponder over it deeply, and then do as you wish.\u201d (verse 18.63)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now as example of journey by car, before you start, whether the car should turn to the right or left; will depend upon what destination you have; not only destination must be very clear; the path also must be very clear. Clarity with regard to the means and the end is extremely important for success in life. And that is why in our tradition, not only they taught various occupations in life, they also discussed what is the ultimate goal of life; they discussed what is dharma, k\u0101ma, art\u0101, and m\u014dk\u1e63a, the caturvida puru\u1e63\u0101rth\u0101s; the four fold human goals are introduced in the brahmacarya \u0101\u015brama itself; and when a student comes out of the education, he knew what is the immediate goal, and he also knew what is the ultimate goal. And that is why in the Kath\u014dpani\u1e63ad; buddhi is compared to the driver; the driver must be informed and also the driver must be sober. Sober, you know! Informed drunken driver, information is useless; not only he must be informed, information is intellectual qualification, and he should not be drunken driver means, it is an emotional qualification; I should have a high IQ and I should have a high EQ also. Emotionally balanced and intellectually enlightened person with regard to the goals and the means is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we will see in a later topic in this chapter, the varna aashrama system, the system of aptitude and stage of life, helps us determine whether we should act at all, and if so, which actions should we perform and which we should not. A student should focus on studying, not in creating a family. A soldier should focus on protecting his country, not making money by selling his country out. The varna aashrama system helps address the first two assessments: engagement and withdrawal, and what is our duty and what is not. For example, if we get a new business proposal, we should assess whether we have the aptitude to execute it, but also, whether we are in the right stage of life. It is no use starting a new business when we are in our late sixties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the varna aashrama system has approved the performance of an action, we need to test whether the action is motivated by personal reward, or whether it is motivated by selfless service. If we have fear in our mind while performing an action, chances are that a trace of egoism has crept into it. We may be doing the action out of the need for praise and honour. But if our mind is fearless, we can assume that our action is motivated out of selflessness. Lastly, as we perform one action after another, we should always examine whether these actions are taking us closer to liberation or are further entrenching us in the material world. An intellect that guides us in such a manner is termed saattvic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
