Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One who is free from attachment, who does not support egoism, filled with fortitude and enthusiasm, unperturbed in success and failure, such a doer is called saattvic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us recap what we have seen so far. Jnyaana or knowledge shapes our world view and prompts our actions. It is a product of Prakriti and is of three types. Karma or action itself is also of three types. Now, Shri Krishna starts a new topic and describes three types of the kartaa, the doer. The doer is nothing but the state of our mind from the start of an action to its end. In other words, the same action can be performed differently by different types of doers. We see this in our lives as well. No two people will perform a task in quite the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna clarifies that those situated in the mode of goodness are not inactive; rather they work with enthusiasm and determination. The difference is that their work is performed in proper consciousness. S\u0101ttvic doers are mukta sanga\u1e25, i.e. they do not try to cling to things in worldly attachment, nor do they believe that worldly things can bestow satisfaction to the soul. Hence, they work with noble motives. And since their intentions are pure, they are filled with uts\u0101ha (zeal) and dh\u1e5biti (strong resolve) in their endeavors. Their mental attitude results in the least dissipation of energies while working. Thus, they are able to work tirelessly to fulfil their sublime motives. Though they may accomplish great things, they are anaham v\u0101d\u012b (free from egotism), and they give all credit for their successes to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This recall the shlok 2. 47 which is as under:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only have a right to action (karma) and not to the fruits of your karma. Do not become a person who constantly meditates upon (gets attached to) the results of one\u2019s karma. Do not get attached to inactivity (no karma).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shloka describes a doer who is of the nature of sattva, of is sattvic.  He has following qualities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) The one who uses karma or action only as a temporary means to transcend the karma; because karma is very very useful up to the attainment of citta \u015buddhi; karma is extremely useful up to the attainment of mental purity; after the attainment of mental purity; karma becomes an obstacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the second reason is karma will only invoke my kart\u0101 nature. The more am I involved in karma, the more the kartr\u0325tva\u1e41, I am the doer notion is reinforced, whereas the ultimate truth is I am akart\u0101. So, since karma invokes the kart\u0101, karma is an obstacle to the discovery of I am akart\u0101 truth; and therefore, we should remember, I have to use karma for sometimes, purify the mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) And a karma y\u014dgi is one who knows this fact. And therefore, he does not get attached to any type of karma, because he remembers I have to do this and later, I have to drop this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) The one who does not allow his karma and especially his successful karma to get into his head. when I do certain noble activities, there is a chance that it causes aha\u1e45k\u0101ra means ego in me and I come to know that I have a status in society, as long as I have such a designation; And once I fall in love with that particular position and role, I would never like to leave this, because attachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4) One who has got am\u0101nitvam; and often we think we are humble, but arrogance unknowingly get into our head. When the people do not acknowledge our contribution, when our name is not read in vote of thanks list, when our photo does not appear in that souvenir, when we do not get the garland on the stage; we feel hurt, and the hurt is the indication of ahamk\u0101ra coming up; karma y\u014dgi will never allow that to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5) Whether people recognise or acknowledge, whether people reciprocate or not, whether the people have gratitude or not, this person is enthusiastic in his action, dh\u1e5bti uts\u0101ha samanvita\u1e25. dh\u1e5bti means one who has perseverance; one whose enthusiasm is not dampened by failure; if his attempt in any field fails, he will not withdraw, again he will do, again he will do; Krishna himself will talk about this will power later; there we will see the details; dh\u1e5bti\u1e25 means will power, perseverance being like a rubber ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6) So therefore, dh\u1e5bti samanvita\u1e25, perseverance, uts\u0101ha samanvita\u1e25; uts\u0101ha, enthusiasm, or cheerfulness; the one who is pessimistic; one who is not negative in his approach; the one who is not critical; one who is always positive and optimistic. That cheerful tendency is called uts\u0101ha\u1e25. he is cheerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their enthusiasm to do their duty lifts them out of any temporary sense of sorrow. In the second chapter, Shri Krishna had emphasized the importance of fortitude, also known as titikshaa. Their utsaaha, their enthusiasm makes them stronger since they are not perturbed by outcome. They are also not concerned about egoism, about tooting their horn in front of others, since they are unconcerned about how good or bad they will look in front of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7) And a positive person is one who will talk about all positive things that are happening in the creation; creation has got positive events and negative events; your world depends upon what you think; the world remaining the same, mixture of positive and negative, you talk of positive events, you are surrounded by positiveness; if you talk of negative events; you are surrounded by negative things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8) The one who enjoys a balanced mind; whatever be the consequence of his undertaking. Whether my activities are going to be fruitful or not, I cannot decide; because karma\u1e47y\u0113v\u0101dhik\u0101rast\u0113 m\u0101 phal\u0113\u1e63u kad\u0101cana; I can undertake projects but how the consequence will be, I cannot decide; because there are innumerable unknowable and uncontrollable factors; therefore siddhi success and asiddhi failure, they are not in my hands; but how I should respond to them, the response is in my hands. And s\u0101tvika kart\u0101 is one who has trained his mind to maintain the balance whatever be the consequence. Therefore, nirvik\u0101ra\u1e25 means the one who maintains poise. The one who is not seriously affected by the one who is not overwhelmed by positive result also, the one who is not overwhelmed by negative result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9) And therefore, s\u0101tvika kart\u0101 is one who has got \u012a\u1e63varapa\u1e47a pras\u0101da bh\u0101vana; that means a s\u0101tvika kart\u0101 must be a bhakta\u1e25; you can never be a s\u0101tvika kart\u0101, without devotion to God. Therefore, karma y\u014dga presupposes faith in God. Karma y\u014dga presupposes surrender to God. And therefore, such a nirvik\u0101ra\u1e25 s\u0101tvika\u1e25 kart\u0101 uchyat\u0113. So thus, s\u0101tvika kart\u0101 is another name for karma y\u014dgi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
