Knowledge, the known and the knower, these three-initiate action. The instruments, the target of action and the doer, these three are the basis of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The culmination of the Gita teaching is the realization that our true nature is the eternal essence, that does not act in this world, nor experiences anything in this world, since action and experience are in the realm of Prakriti. Most of us, however, are still becoming qualified for this teaching through the practice of karma yoga. Shri Krishna recognizes the need to give an in-depth analysis of action for people like us. To that end, he uses this shloka to begin that topic. Each word, each term needs to be understood clearly, since the regular meanings may confuse us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, there are the only two main s\u0101dan\u0101s of a human being; any s\u0101dan\u0101 that you do, to purify the mind is called karma y\u014dga; it may be japa, it may be p\u016bja, it may be y\u014dga etc. etc., whatever you to purify the mind is called karma y\u014dga. And whatever you do to understand that I am free, whatever intellectual exercise you take up to understand that I am ever free, that process is called j\u00f1\u0101na y\u014dga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the human activities can be broadly classified into two; one is called knowing- process; another is called doing- process or you can say j\u00f1\u0101na vyavah\u0101ra\u1e25; and karma j\u00f1\u0101na vyavah\u0101ra\u1e25 is the first process. All the activities begin with knowing; So once you know a object, a person, a thing, anything for that matter, you develop either a like for the object, or a dislike; An unknown object you never like or dislike; so once you know an object you develop a like or dislike; once you develop a like, your activity begins to go after the object; pravr\u0325ti\u1e25;  For j\u00f1\u0101nam produces either r\u0101ga\u1e25<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or dve\u1e63a\u1e25, when it is r\u0101ga\u1e25, like, your activities is called prav\u1e5btti and going away is called niv\u1e5btti. All born out of what, r\u0101ga\u1e25- dve\u1e63a\u1e25; r\u0101ga dve\u1e63a\u1e25 is born out of what; the knowledge of the object. If you do not know, if you are bothered; hundred years before, two hundred years before, you could not have had gone after a television, because it was not there. You would not have gone for air conditioning; you would not have gone after the fan; because of lack of knowledge. Most of the things we now go after they did not go after, because they did not know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, what is the mechanism; we have talked about: Knows, Desires, Goes after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Krishna tells this j\u00f1\u0101na vyavah\u0101ra\u1e25 and karma vyavah\u0101ra\u1e25 both involves three factors, known as triputi; meaning the subject, object and the instrument. Any j\u00f1\u0101nam involves three factors: subject, object and instrument. And similarly, any action also involves, the subject, object, instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now look at the sl\u014dk\u0101. J\u00f1\u0101nam, means knowledge; j\u00f1\u0113yam, the object of knowledge, parij\u00f1\u0101ta, the knower, the subject, knowledge, the object, and the subject, this trivida, three-fold group, or triad, is karma ch\u014ddana, c\u014ddan\u0101 means Promoters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have to make a note when we say j\u00f1\u0101nam generates desire and action, we should understand it is the knowledge of everything in the world, except self-knowledge. We should not include self- knowledge here.  only All the other material knowledge, all the other \u0101para vidy\u0101 creates desires, whereas par\u0101 vidy\u0101 is not a creator of desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there is another triad consisting of three factors, for karma vyavah\u0101ra\u1e25; namely kara\u1e47a\u1e41 means instrument; karma means object and kart\u0101 means the subject; subject- object- instrument, this trivida; this triad; group of three; is karma sa\u1e45graha\u1e25, is the framework within which all the actions take place. So, when one triad required for j\u00f1\u0101na vyavah\u0101ra\u1e25; another triad required for karma vyavah\u0101ra\u1e25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So then, what is the genesis, the birth of an action? How does an action commence? Our sense organs send a report to the mind of having seen, felt, touched, tasted or smelled something. This is the process of perception. Or, a thought about a prior perception arises in the mind. Both these processes are the same for all people in this world. Both you and I perceive a red apple in the same manner. In this case, the red apple is termed as jneyam, an object which is known. This is step one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens next? Both of us see the same red apple, but you may love it, someone else may hate it, and I would be indifferent to it. This difference in our view towards the apple, our worldview in general, is due to the difference in our samskaaras. We attach a certain meaning to objects, people and situations based on our samskaaras. This individual vision of the world is termed knowledge or jnyaanam. It looks at the object in question and generates a sense of attraction, repulsion or indifference. This is step two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, this notion of attraction, repulsion or indifference creates a modification in the intellect called the “doer”, the kartaa. It is a phantom, illusory entity which says, “I want the red apple, go get it”, or “I hate this red apple, throw it away”. The doer issues these instructions to the karana, the organs of action, which then do as they are told. The action of grasping the apple or throwing it away is carried out. Note the the doer only comes into existence when there is attraction or repulsion. The jeeva is a witness, indifferent to likes or dislikes. So the doer, the organs of action and the object make up karma sangraha, the basis of action. This is step three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When finally, the object, the target of action is consumed by the senses, another modification of the mind called the “enjoyer”, the bhoktaa, arises. It creates the notion that “I have experienced this object, and it gave me joy\/sorrow”. This is the parijnyaata, the knower, mentioned in the shloka. Furthermore, a record of this experience, whether pleasurable or painful, is stored in the unconscious aspect of our personality, the causal body. This record, this samskaara, becomes the seed of future action by creating thoughts of desire in the mind, prompting further actions and experiences. This process of enjoyment of an object is the fourth step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So these four steps taken together describe the lifecycle of an action, from start to finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
