Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foundation, the doer and several instruments, and the various movements of several types, as well as the divinity, the fifth in these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this verse, adhi\u1e63h\u1e6dh\u0101nam means \u201cplace of residence,\u201d and refers to the body, since karmas can only be performed when the soul is situated in the body. Kart\u0101 means \u201cthe doer,\u201d and refers to the soul. Although the soul itself does not perform actions, it inspires the body- mind- intellect mechanism with the life force to act. Further, it identifies with their actions, due to the influence of the ego. Therefore, it is responsible for the actions performed by the body, and it is called both the knower and the doer. The Brahma S\u016btra also states: j\u00f1o \u2018ta eva (2.3.18)[v4] \u201cIt is truly the soul that is the knower.\u201d Again, the Brahma S\u016btra states: kart\u0101 \u015bh\u0101str\u0101rthavattv\u0101t (2.3.33)[v5] \u201cThe soul is the doer of actions, and this is confirmed by the scriptures.\u201d From the above quotations, it is clear that the soul is also a factor in accomplishing actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senses are instruments used for performing actions.  There are also the five working senses\u2014hands, legs, voice, genitals, and anus. It is with their help that the soul accomplishes various kinds of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite all the instruments of action, if one does not put in effort, nothing is ever done. Therefore, che\u1e63h\u1e6dh\u0101 (effort) is another ingredient of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God is seated within the body of the living being as the witness. Based upon their past karmas, he also bestows different abilities to different people to perform actions. One may call this Divine Providence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nowadays robots are quite common and are being used for cleaning home floors as well. For a robot to perform any action, there are at least three factors at work. First is the body of the robot, which will determine things like how fast or how powerful actions can be performed. Second is the instruments of the robot, such as its sensors, its hands, its wheels and so on. Third is the power system of the robot, which typically is electricity but could also be diesel or steam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna says that whenever a human being performs an action, the same three factors come into play. The size of our body, the state of our instruments (organs of action and organs of sense) and our power system (our praana, our energy and health), each factor is responsible for the fate of our action. But there has to be something that differentiates us from robots, and therefore, two additional factors are mentioned: the kartaa or the doer, and the daivam or divinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth component known as the kartaa, the doer, also known as the sense of agency, is nothing but the notion of finitude within us, what we normally term as the “I”. When our intellect plans an action, we say, “I am thinking” instead of saying “the intellect is thinking”. When our hand is performing the action, we say “I am sweeping the floor” instead of “the hand is sweeping the floor”. When our eyes perceive an obstacle, we say “I see a wall” instead of “the eyes see a wall”. Seen in this manner, the sense of “I” is quite illusory. For now, we can say that it is the motive behind performance of action that identifies with a certain aspect of the mind or body, a certain upaadhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fifth component of any action is the daivam, the divinity. Unless Ishvara supports an action, it will not result in success. Or we can say that the world, or the universe as a whole, also has a part in determining the outcome of an action. Despite everything executed perfectly at the individual level, it still has to align with the action at the universal level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recalling the study of five kosa, Krishna first enumerates; the four factors in the form of the four k\u014d\u015bas, known as annamaya k\u014d\u015ba, pr\u0101\u1e47amaya k\u014d\u015ba, man\u014d maya k\u014d\u015ba, and vij\u00f1\u0101maya k\u014d\u015ba. Annamaya k\u014d\u015ba corresponds to the anatomical part of the personality; annamaya, the anatomical part, the physical, visible part is called annamaya. Then pr\u0101\u1e47amaya k\u014d\u015ba means the physiology part consisting of the bodily functions, mere anatomy does not make a living being; dead body also has got all the anatomy; the physical part is there; but the physiological functions have ended; you keep your hands in front of the nostrils to find out whether breathing is functioning, that is the physiological thing and similarly, pulse and digestion, circulation, they all come under physiology, for pr\u0101\u1e47amaya k\u014d\u015ba, means the physiological part. And then man\u014dmaya k\u014d\u015ba, corresponds psychological or emotional personality, consisting of love, compassion, jealousy, hatred, anger. In fact, it is these emotions which are driving us into a lot of activity. Therefore, man\u014dmaya k\u014d\u015ba is the third factor. The fourth factor is the vij\u00f1\u0101namaya k\u014d\u015ba, the rational faculty; the thinking faculty; which we all supposed to have, sometimes doubtful, which are supposed to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generally we considered fifth kosa Anandmaya but here we take Anandmaya kosa included with monomaya kosa and the fifth factor is daivam; known as the adhi\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101n\u0101 devatha; according to the scriptures, every organ has got a presiding deity; which also we saw in Tatva Bodha, for the eye the presiding deity is surya; for the mind, the presiding deity is moon; for the hand the presiding deity is hasthayor Indra. All the presiding deities put together is called daivam. So without the blessing of God, no organ can function. Therefore, four k\u014d\u015bas plus the presiding principle, known as Hira\u1e47yagarba tatvam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
