Whatever action is done, should be performed only as an obligatory duty. In this manner, giving up attachment and also the reward, that giving up is saattvic, in my opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna explains the correct way, the saattvic method, of performing actions. Let us look at this step by step. The first step is to only perform actions that are within the realm of our state in life, our aashrama, and our career, our varna. Actions that are prohibited or actions that are purely out of selfishness should not be performed. These actions are termed as niyatam karma in the shloka. A high degree of awareness is required to first ensure that we are not stepping into any prohibited actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second step is to give up attachment to the reward, the phala, the fruit, of the action. Attachment to the reward need not be something tangible and physical. It could be subtle things like praise and adoration received from others on successful completion of the action. It could be a subtle thought such as “I have helped that person, so nice of me to do so”. The goal is to slowly wean the mind away from its natural tendency to expect rewards for every action. We can do so my substituting our personal motive with a motive for selfless service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whereas a saattvic person is one, who knows that he is not yet prepared. Therefore, it is for him to decide where he stands and this sattvic person knows what he wants is m\u014dk\u1e63a means liberalisation, m\u014dk\u1e63a requires j\u00f1\u0101nam means knowledge, j\u00f1\u0101nam requires citta \u015buddhi means internal purity chitta \u015buddhi requires s\u0101tvika karm\u0101\u1e47i means work with pure and unattached mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This clarity he has got. He does not suffer from the problem of ignorance. He has knowledge. Even if he has got knowledge, if he is attached to the body problem, he will know that I know, but I would not do. But this saattvic person does not have the problem of bodily attachment; he knows physical karmas involve physical strain. He would not call it a strain because he sees it as a necessity. And he sees the positive benefit coming out of that strenuous action and therefore this strain will not appear as strain; like the people who stand in Tirupati queue for 14 hours; 16 hours, 24 hours, it may be a strain, but they value the dar\u015banam, this strain will not appear strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third step is to give up attachment to the action itself. We saw the types of attachment to action in the previous shloka, including attachment to the completion of action and attachment to one particular way of performing the action. The key is to realize that at every moment, we are giving it the best of our ability and attention. The rest is upto Ishvara, since there are several other factors at play in the outcome of an action. But in no circumstance should our energy level go down. We have to combine energy in our work with indifference to the reward of the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renunciation is definitely necessary for spiritual attainment. But the problem is that people\u2019s understanding of renunciation is very shallow and they consider it to be only the external abandonment of works. Such renunciation leads to hypocrisy in which, while externally donning the robes of a renunciant, one internally contemplates upon the objects of the senses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when he performs his duty still having some achievement in name of success, how we recognise his contribution as Satvik. He is real renouncing of fruit of his work means any expectation or attachment. whatever, comes out of his work, he enjoys without any grievances. Therefore, the real meaning of Sanyansa and tyaag is to perform your duty, accept its result and do not have any expectation or attachment and all in benefit of Society, even run a business like Ratan Tata is Sanyansa or operate school, office or your profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
