Sages understand sannyasa to be the giving up of desire prompted actions. Giving up the rewards of all actions is tya\u0101g, the learned ones declare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjuna wanted to know the difference between sanyaasa and tyaaga. Shri Krishna did not answer this question directly. He wanted to answer the question in such a way that Arjuna would be able to put the answer into practical use, and not get caught in complicated semantics, something that has only academic value. It was almost as though he said – Arjuna, you don\u2019t worry about the difference in meaning of sanyaasa and tyaaga for now. You are a warrior, a kshatriya. I will tell you what is appropriate for you such that you can advance spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renunciation is primarily associated with karma or action. Even though renunciation is associated with all things, including possessions and relationship, generally renunciation is associated with karma or activity. In fact, that is the toughest job also, because not to do anything is the toughest thing. An idle mind is a devil’s worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renunciation is associated with karma and in the \u015b\u0101stra, karmas are divided into five types; which I have talked about before, but you can briefly note here: No.1 is called vihita karma, compulsory duties; No.2, kamya karma or sak\u0101ma karma, optional activities, to be taken to, if you want to; optional activities; No.3 Ni\u1e63idha (prohibited) karma, prohibited activity. No.4 is pr\u0101yaschitta karma, pr\u0101yaschitta karma, i.e. remedial activities; an action done to remedy a Ni\u1e63idha karma\u1e25, karma when Ni\u1e63idha karma is done; and No.5. finally, naimithika karma; occasional duties when the situation arises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vihita karma, compulsory duties; keeping that only and giving up of all other karmas, what are they, k\u0101mya karma, pr\u0101yaschitta karma, Ni\u1e63idha karma. So, giving up of k\u0101mya karma, and the other etc. is understood, is called sany\u0101sa\u1e25 according to some scholars. That means what? One should retain the nitya karma and even naimithika karma is considered to be compulsory. So, two has to be kept. one and five are compulsory, 2,3,4 can be given up. Giving up of 2,3 and 4, is called sany\u0101sa, retaining one and 5. Vihita and naimithika; Vihitha is sometime called nithya also; nithya and naimithika karmas are returned; K\u0101mya, Ni\u1e63idha\u1e25 and pr\u0101yaschitta karmas are given up. This karma renunciation is called sany\u0101sa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a person does nithya, naimithika karma, without expecting even acknowledgement or compensation, that renunciation of materialistic result, karma phala Ty\u0101ga\u1e25. Karma phalam of what? One and five; one and five karmas should do and the result of that karma, one should not expect; that is Ty\u0101ga\u1e25, according to some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, karma ty\u0101ga is sany\u0101sa and karma phala Ty\u0101ga\u1e25 is Ty\u0101ga\u1e25. Sarva karma; here sarva means, sarva 1 and 5 karmas are done, without expecting any award or reward; that is called Ty\u0101ga\u1e25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shree Krishna states that wise people lay emphasis on ty\u0101g, meaning \u201cinternal renunciation.\u201d This implies not relinquishing the prescribed Vedic duties, rather renouncing the desires for enjoying their fruits. Therefore, the attitude of giving up attachment to the rewards of actions is ty\u0101g, while the attitude of giving up works is sanyas. Both sany\u0101s and ty\u0101g seem plausible and reasonable options to pursue for enlightenment. Of these two courses of action, which one does Shree Krishna recommend? He provides more clarity on this topic in the subsequent verses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to kavaya\u1e25 vicak\u1e63a\u1e47\u0101\u1e25. kavaya\u1e25 means learned people, vicak\u1e63a\u1e47\u0101\u1e25 means enlightened people or \u015b\u0101stra ku\u015bal\u0101, experts in the \u015b\u0101stras. the view presented here is learned and enlighten people for sannyasa and tya\u0101g, it is not shri krishna view.
