Om, Tat, Sat, this has been declared as the triple indicator of the eternal essence. By that were created the braahmanaas, the Vedas and the sacrifices, long ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjuna began this chapter with a question to Shri Krishna: How can we determine the texture of our faith, as to whether it is saattvic, raajasic or taamasic?Shree Krishna explained the categories of yaj\u00f1a (sacrifice), tapa\u1e25 (austerity), and d\u0101n (charity), according to the three modes of material nature. Amongst these three modes, the mode of ignorance degrades the soul into nescience, languor, and sloth. The mode of passion excites the living being and binds it in innumerable desires. The mode of goodness is serene and illuminating and engenders the development of virtues. Yet, the mode of goodness is also within the realm of Maya. We must not get attached to it; instead, we must use the mode of goodness as a stepping-stone to reach the transcendental platform. In this verse, Shree Krishna goes beyond the three gu\u1e47as, and discusses the words Om Tat Sat, which symbolize different aspects of the Absolute Truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna replied that even if we manage to perform only sattvic actions, there will always be the chance of some error creeping in. Here, Shri Krishna gives us a formula, a technique to remove errors and defects in saattvic actions. This purifier is the combination of three words – Om, Tat and Sat. All three words are indicators of the eternal essence, of brahman. In fact, each of these words has been used in the Vedas to refer to the eternal essence. Om comes up in the Rig Veda. Tat and Sat come up in the Chhaandogya Upanishad. The word Sat is also used in the second chapter of the Gita to refer to the eternal essence. Note that the eternal essence is beyond name and form. These words are only pointers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been explained that penance, sacrifice, charity and foods are divided into three categories: the modes of goodness, passion and ignorance. But whether first class, second class or third class, they are all conditioned, contaminated by the material modes of nature. When they are aimed at the Supreme — om tat sat, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the eternal — they become means for spiritual elevation. In the scriptural injunctions such an objective is indicated. These three words, om tat sat, particularly indicate the Absolute Truth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In the Vedic hymns, the word om is always found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One who acts without following the regulations of the scriptures will not attain the Absolute Truth. He will get some temporary result, but not the ultimate end of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conclusion is that the performance of charity, sacrifice and penance must be done in the mode of goodness. Performed in the mode of passion or ignorance, they are certainly inferior in quality. The three words om tat sat are uttered in conjunction with the holy name of the Supreme Lord, e.g., om tad vishnoh. Whenever a Vedic hymn or the holy name of the Supreme Lord is uttered, om is added. This is the indication of Vedic literature. These three words are taken from Vedic hymns. Om ity etad brahmano nedishtham nama (Rig Veda)<\/strong> indicates the first goal. Then tat tvam asi (Chandogya Upanishad 6.8.7)<\/strong> indicates the second goal. And sad eva saumya (Chandogya Upanishad 6.2.1)<\/strong> indicates the third goal. Combined they become om tat sat. Formerly when Brahma, the first created living entity, performed sacrifices, he indicated by these three words the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, the same principle has always been followed by disciple succession. So, this hymn has great significance. Bhagavad- Gita recommends, therefore, that any work done should be done for om tat sat, or for the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When one performs penance, charity and sacrifice with these three words, he is acting in Krishna consciousness. Krishna consciousness is a scientific execution of transcendental activities which enables one to return home, back to Godhead. There is no loss of energy in acting in such a transcendental way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So V\u0113das were created by Brahm\u0101ji and Br\u0101hma\u1e47a; so, the preservers and promoters of the V\u0113da are called Br\u0101hma\u1e47a, gu\u1e47a Br\u0101hma\u1e47a, karma Br\u0101hma\u1e47a, whose who are dedicated and promotion of V\u0113das; all these have been created by Br\u0101hma\u1e47a; by Lord Brahm\u0101ji, all these three have been created pura, long before; and therefore Om Tat Sat is a sacred mantra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, Shri Krishna gives us the heritage of this purifier. Prajaapati, Lord Brahma, created the universe along with the sacrifice and the Vedas, as we have seen in the third chapter. He also created braahmanaas, who performed rituals and sacrifices with faith in the Vedas. These braahmanaas would always use Om Tat Sat to purify their sacrifices, to remove any defects in the rituals. Now, per the teaching of karma yoga, whenever we perform saattvic actions, they automatically become a sacrifice. Therefore, even we can use Om Tat Sat to purify our saattvic actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
