Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those words that do not perturb others, that are true, pleasant and beneficial, and also the practice of recitation of scriptures, that is called the penance of speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having described the penance of the body, Shri Krishna now describes penance of speech or vaangmaya tapa. He mentions four conditions of speech: that it should be true, it should be pleasant to hear, it should benefit the other person, and it should not cause any disturbance in the other person\u2019s mind. Whenever we speak statements that fulfill all these four conditions, we are practicing penance of the mind. Putting it differently, we are not wasting or dissipating the energy of our speech when we speak like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Austerity of speech is speaking words that are truthful, unoffending, pleasing, and beneficial for the listener. The practice of the recitation of Vedic mantras is also included in the austerities of speech. The progenitor, Manu, wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generally, when we talk of superiority of human beings, we enumerate or mention only the intelligence or buddhi as the main faculty, which differentiates, distinguishes the human being from all others, say animals do not have great intelligence. Therefore when we talk about the intelligence faculty only, but we should remember, as  important is the intelligence faculty is the importance of the organ of speech, which makes the human vastly different from all animals, and especially the speaking organ, the animals can produce maximum certain sounds, but human species can have highly developed language; highly developed grammar and to understand the superiority of v\u0101k indriyam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

where human has been provided organ to speak, we must understand the qualities of powerful speech. First most requirment is to speak with words which are spoken properly and intelligently because the words can give even immortality and peace of mind. The second lesson I have to think and assimilate is that I have to be a responsible speaker, which means I have no right to allow loose words to go out. The words which are spoken without assimilation may harm the others. The third lesson I have to understand and assimilative is if I have to produce quality words, if I have to produce quality words out of my mouth; the quantity must be limited. Without quantity control, quality control is impossible. I will talk to only those people, who are interested in listening to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whenever you are in conversation, you study the body language of the person, we can see his rejection, restlessness, etc. he will look this side, that side, see the watch, and will be thinking that if only this man leaves me alone, etc. And fourth lesson is what are the parameters to check the quality of the words, I check the quality, norms in industry they talk about TQM, Total Quality Management.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, we may think that satisfying even two or three of these conditions is impractical. However, speaking tactfully is a skill needed in our daily lives. For instance, what is true may not always be the most pleasant thing to convey. In the office, we have to deliver all kinds of messages to people without them losing face. Even in the home, while talking to spouse, just conveying information factually does not always work best. Therefore, putting thought into choosing our words carefully has practical as well as spiritual benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, many of us have an urge to say something when we are by ourselves. Here, Shri Krishna suggests that we recite scriptures daily, like chanting the second chapter of the Gita, for instance. Doing so satisfies our urge of speaking, and also forces the mind to contemplate the Gita teaching rather than stray here and there. In fact, it becomes a form of meditation as well. Once we memorize the shlokas, we can contemplate upon them whenever we want, without having to rely on a book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
