Those people who perform horrible austerities that are shunned by laws of scripture, entrenched in ostentation and pride, possessed with the force of desire and attachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In these two verses Lord Krishna talks about rajasic and tamasic forms of worship based on the manner and purpose. Krishna does not differentiate them; you have to classify properly. Rajasic and tamasic worship involves violation of all scriptural injunctions, all ignorance and illiteracy about religion and spirituality and people are also uneducated, if somebody does extraordinary things, they consider it very great. And all these people do it for what purpose? Because of their own fame- seeking, for pomp and show; to tell people that I am a great ascetic. So, because of conceit and ego, pride and vanity, all this happens in ignorance. Their desire is not at all liberation. Their desire is worldly name or fame or wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us imagine that you are attending a class on basic electronic circuits. It is your first day in the electronics lab. If you have a good teacher, chances are that they will not start day one of the class with the topic of electronics itself. They will probably talk about the dos and don\u2019ts of handling electronics equipment. This is because they have your safety and the safety of other students in mind. Shri Krishna, teacher extraordinaire, uses this shloka and next to give us a warning before delving into the topic of analysing the texture of our faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 This warning is very simple. Any time we see people abuse and torture themselves or others in the name of devotion, physically or mentally, we need to stay away from such people. Or, in the rare chance that we have been misguided by someone to do such things, we should immediately stop. Such torture could be something as basic as denying oneself food and water to the detriment of one\u2019s health or could be as terrible as poking and prodding oneself with pins and needles. None of this is sanctioned by any scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the name of spirituality, people perform senseless austerities. Some lie on beds of thorns or drive spikes through their bodies as a part of macabre rituals for dominion over material existence. Others keep one hand raised for years, as a procedure they believe will help them gain mystic abilities. Some gaze constantly at the sun, unmindful of the harm it does to their eyes. Others undertake long fasts, withering their body away for imagined material gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, remember, religion does not have to make a person spiritual. There are materialistic religious people, there are demonic religious people, there are Vedantic religious people, so here these people are full of kama-raga-bala; Ravana had the power of cruelty, Hiranyakashipu also had the power of penance and Shishupal was also among them. They were all worshippers of God. They were all worshippers of the rajasic and tamasic type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
