He who dismisses the laws of scripture and conducts himself according to impulses of desire, he neither attains success, nor happiness, nor the supreme goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine that we have to assemble a complex piece of furniture. Most people will follow the instructions given in the manual that comes in the box. But, for some reason, let\u2019s say we ignore the manual and build what we want based on a whim. What will be the outcome? We will be unsuccessful in building a functional piece of furniture. Consequently, we will not be happy with this outcome. Without following the manual, we neither gain success nor attain happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna says that if we live our lives based solely on our desires, we will neither attain success in any worldly endeavour, nor will we attain worldly happiness. The supreme goal of self-realization then is totally out of the question. Unfortunately, whenever we feel disillusioned, we usually seek guidance from the latest self-help book or try to emulate the lives of those who have had significant material prosperity. Such guidance may get us temporary happiness in a small part of our life but will never solve our predicament holistically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So mere change from \u0101s\u016bri sampath to daivi sampath alone is not enough. A good character does not guarantee liberation. A moral or ethical life by itself will not lead to liberation because an ethical life does not remove ignorance. Only difference is that he is an ethically ignorant person. Therefore, if ignorance has to go away, he has to pursue spiritual sadhana. And that he said tat\u014d par\u0101\u1e41 gatim y\u0101nti. He will attain param gatim, m\u014dk\u1e63a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scriptures are the guide maps given to humans on the journey toward enlightenment. They provide us with knowledge and understanding. They also give us instructions on what to do and what not to do. These instructions are of two kinds\u2014vidhi and ni\u1e63hedh. The directives to perform certain activities are called vidhi. The directives not to perform certain activities are called ni\u1e63hedh. By faithfully following both these kinds of injunctions, human beings can proceed toward perfection. But the ways of the demoniac are the reverse of the teachings of the scriptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And on the other hand, if a person does not change the direction of life, what will happen to him? Statutory warning: one side they will say, every puff (cigarette smoking) is a promise, in big letters, or something, what all slogans are there, and down below they write, cigarette smoking is injurious to your health; Krishna is doing exactly the same thing. The best thing is to follow my teaching; and if you do not follow, the statutory warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shree Krishna declares that those who renounce the authorized path and act according to their whims, impelled by the impulses of their desires, achieve neither true knowledge, nor the perfection of happiness, nor liberation from material bondage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So then, what is the solution? Shri Krishna points us to the Vedas, the scriptures, as a guide towards checking our selfish desire- oriented life. He is in no way advocating a dogmatic, ideological or blind faith-oriented lifestyle that imposes restrictions upon society. The Gita, in fact, presents the very principles of the Vedas in a format that is meant for practical individuals. The notion of svadharma, of following a career path that is in line with our interests and our qualifications, is a perfect example of guidance from the scriptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
