Entering into devilish wombs, the deluded individuals, from birth after birth, do not attain me, O Kaunteya. They attain destinations even lower than that (state).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, Shri Krishna expresses his regret about a lost opportunity. Anyone who has attained a human birth has a chance to achieve self-realization and liberation. But those individuals who engage in destruction of others instead of improving their state give up this golden opportunity. Such people enter a never-ending descent into lower and lower realms of existence. An example given in most commentaries is that of kumbhipaaka, where individuals spend their time in a pot of boiling oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God makes this decision according to the nature and karma of the individual. Thus, the demoniac is sent into lower and degraded wombs, even to the level of snakes, lizards, and scorpions, which are receptacles for the evil-minded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such is the rare and special nature of a human birth, that most spiritual masters have mentioned it in their texts. Shankaraachaarya begins the Vivekachoodamani text with this proclamation: “For beings a human birth is hard to win, then manhood and holiness, then excellence in the path of wise law; hardest of all to win is wisdom. Discernment between Self and not-Self, true judgment, nearness to the Self of the Eternal and Freedom are not gained without a myriad of right acts in a hundred births”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First thing is the wrong action itself will produce a p\u0101pam. That is one negative point; and another worse thing is every action that I do, creates a v\u0101sana, an inclination in my mind, because the mind has the capacity to form addiction in whatever it does; the mind has the capacity to form a habit of whatever we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anything you do for a few days; you form a habit. And Krishna says that \u0101s\u016bric people have developed asura v\u0101sanas and because of the karma, v\u0101sanas develop, because of the v\u0101sanas, I repeat the same karma. Like any addiction, first cigarette is smoked because of the will; and then a v\u0101sana smoking v\u0101sana comes; not v\u0101sana is smoking. V\u0101sana for smoking and the second time there is a v\u0101sana which is pulling more; freewill’s contribution is lesser and if he has smoked a few hundreds of cigarettes in few months or few years, with regard to cigarette, his will power is zero. Simply he will not be able to get out of it even though I tell him he is all powerful Brahman; in front of cigarette he is brahman only and not Brahman; he is wonderful in all other places, in this place he will not be able to do anything; it may be drug, it may be liquor, it may be smoke, cigarette, in fact, even our activities are capable of forming addiction; and this can be favorably used, the addiction forming capacity can be favorably used by us; how, by developing \u015bubha v\u0101sana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

janmani janmani, because karma is responsible for v\u0101sana, v\u0101sana is responsible for further karma, further karma is responsible for further v\u0101sana. Thus, janma after janma they come more and more down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why they say, saying No to any addiction is easier in the beginning. The first No is the easiest. Second No is more difficult; and therefore, they say do not go near, even friendship you keep only with those people, who are dh\u0101rmic, satsa\u1e45gha sarvata k\u0101rya; Narada tells in Bhakthi s\u016btra; a good company can only bring out such person from this hard circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The practical implication of this shloka is the importance of free will. Only a human has the ability to shape his or her destiny. Plants, animals and birds cannot do so. All they can do is follow their instincts and their sense organs. If we also start ignoring our intellect and empowering our sense organs, there remains no difference between us and animals. We lose all traces of sattva, and only exist through rajas and tamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
