Whether to engage or to disengage from action, those people with devilish tendencies do not know. Neither purity nor proper conduct nor truth exists in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna begins his explanation of the materialistic viewpoint by examining its value system. He says that those people who come from a purely materialistic viewpoint have a shaky value system. In other words, they do not know what to do and what not to do, when to engage in something and when not to. They focus only on artha or wealth and kaama or desire. They forget that there are two other goals in life, dharma or duty and moksha or liberation, and that each goal is to be picked up and left off at a certain stage in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being a natural living being, every human being has got only two purusharthas, they are called arta and k\u0101ma\u1e25. Arta means what? Money, value for wealth is very natural, even a child has value for money. And the second thing is k\u0101ma pleasure or enjoyment; therefore, everybody by birth has a value for artha kama puru\u1e63\u0101rtha; and therefore our mind develop its own r\u0101ga\u1e25-dve\u1e63a\u1e25s. r\u0101ga\u1e25 means likes and dvesha means dislike. Right from birth, our life is governed by r\u0101ga\u1e25-dve\u1e63a\u1e25s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But once a particular stage comes, we are capable of discrimination and thinking, this r\u0101ga\u1e25-dve\u1e63a\u1e25 based life should be changed; and a new value system should replace the old value system; and the new value system that is prescribed by our scriptures is the spiritual value system. And we do not know the importance of spiritual goals, because we are immature people at that time. And therefore, we should be guided by the scriptures which we look upon as V\u0113d\u0101 m\u0101tha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dharma consists of codes of conduct that are conducive to one\u2019s purification and the general welfare of all living beings. Adharma consists of prohibited actions that lead to degradation and cause harm to society. The demoniac nature is devoid of faith in the knowledge and wisdom of the scriptures. Hence, those under its sway are confused about what is right and wrong action. A thing which is good for me and ni\u1e63\u0113da means that which is not good for me. vidhi means kartavyam; ni\u1e63eda means akarthavyam or varjaniyam and the Sr\u0325uti asks us to replace the r\u0101ga\u1e25-dve\u1e63a\u1e25 based life by vidhi-ni\u1e63\u0113da based life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A typical example of this is the present trend in western philosophy. Having evolved through various schools of thought after the Renaissance, such as Age of Enlightenment, Humanism, Empiricism, Communism, Existentialism, and Skepticism, the present era in western philosophy is labelled as \u201cpost-modernism.\u201d The prevalent view of post-modernist thought is that there is no absolute truth. Multitudes have rejected the possibility that such a thing as absolute truth could exist. \u201cAll is relative\u201d has become the slogan of the post-modernist era of philosophy. We often hear phrases like \u201cthat may be true for you, but it\u2019s not true for me.\u201d Truth is seen as a personal preference or perception that cannot extend beyond a person\u2019s individual boundaries. This viewpoint has a big bearing on the subject of ethics, which deals with the question of right and wrong behavior. If there is no such thing as absolute truth, then there is no ultimate moral rightness or wrongness about anything. Then, people are justified in saying, \u201cIt may be right for you but that does not mean it is right for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, since such people are unclear about the pros and cons of everything, they are bound to do things in a haphazard and messy way. Shri Krishna says that such people do not have shaucha, they do not have purity. He refers not just to external purity but also internal. When someone does not have a systematic way of thinking through things, there is a strong chance that they will lead messy lives. Furthermore, their conduct towards others, their aacharana, will also be messy and haphazard. They will lack good manners, courtesy and politeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also follows that when someone does not know the pros and cons of anything, they will not place a lot of importance on satyam, truth, doing things the right way. So if they do not get the result they want, they have no qualms in getting their results by lying, cheating and deceit. They do not want to wait for the result, because waiting takes time. If there is a shortcut, they will go for it. Such is the value system of the aasuri, the devilish, the materialistic viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shree Krishna states that the demoniac nature is confused about what is right and what is wrong, and thus, neither purity, nor truth, nor right conduct is found in them. In the following verse, he goes on to describe the predominant views of such people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
