Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two beings in this world, the perishable and the imperishable. All beings constitute the perishable, the Kootastha is called the imperishable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shree Krishna says that there are two kinds of beings: the k\u1e63har (perishable) and the ak\u1e63har (imperishable). All beings in the material realm are perishable, and those liberated are imperishable. Although all souls are eternal; in the material realm, Maya binds the individual soul to a material body. Now we study a little in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord Krishna divides the whole universe into three portions or three components. The first portion is the visible universe, which is accessible, perceptible to our sense organs, we can call the manifest matter. Krishna gives a technical name for this component “k\u1e63ara\u1e25 puru\u1e63a\u1e25” or say this “manifest matter”. Then Krishna talks about the second component, when matter is destroyed but by the law of conservation of matter; it is not destroyed but it will get converted into unmanifest form or energy form but it goes to the invisible intangible, “unmanifest” form and therefore, at the time of total destruction of this universe, at the time of pralaya, the matter will continue but not in the form of manifest matter, but it will survive in the form of unmanifest matter and therefore the second component of the universe is matter in unmanifest form. Krishna gives a technical name for this, as A puru\u1e63a\u1e25 or unmanifest matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also an exceptionally rare usage because normally, the word ak\u1e63ara puru\u1e63a\u1e25 is used for Nirgu\u1e47am Brahma or consciousness. That is the general feeling; but in this exceptional context; the unmanifest matter, you may call it energy; is named ak\u1e63ara puru\u1e63a\u1e25.<\/strong> In other context, that alone is called M\u0101ya, because in V\u0113d\u0101nta M\u0101ya is unmanifest universe, unmanifest matter, and that m\u0101ya tatvam, unmanifest matter principle, in this context is called ak\u1e63aram puru\u1e63a\u1e25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the third component of the entire cosmos is the consciousness principle. Consciousness principle, c\u0113tana tatvam is the third component, because according to our scriptures, consciousness is distinct from matter. Remember, consciousness is not a part, product or property of matter. This consciousness principle, Krishna names Uttama\u1e25 puru\u1e63a\u1e25. This consciousness principle, Krishna calls uttama\u1e25 puru\u1e63a\u1e25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you make a comparative study of these all three components. We will see certain important differences among these three. i.e. Manifest matter, unmanifest matter and consciousness. Out of these three, the first two components being matter, both of them are ac\u0113tana tatvam; inert principle, whereas the third one being consciousness, it is c\u0113tana tatvam. First two are inert, the third one is sentient. Then Second is the first two principles being matter, or material, it is full of varieties of properties or attributes or qualities. In Sanskrit, we call it gu\u1e47a\u1e25; therefore, the first two components are sagu\u1e47am in nature, whereas the consciousness according to v\u0113d\u0101nta is free from all the attributes; therefore, nirgu\u1e47a tatvam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the third difference, both manifest and unmanifest is subject to modification; violent changes. Matter can never remain the same. It is constantly undergoing changes. In fact, this manifest and unmanifest matter themselves are inter- convertible. Then the fourth difference, the matter principle, both manifest and unmanifest are subject to divisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Computer programmers love to create video games that can put the player in a gigantic virtual world where they can blow up aliens. What is interesting is that the same computer game can create a different world each time, with different kinds of aliens in different place. In other words, the infinitely complex virtual worlds created by the game can change, but the computer game program remains the same. Our visible universe is quite similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna begins to summarize the teaching of this chapter by asserting that everything in the world can be classified into two categories. The first category comprises the visible world, the tangible world which comprises all living and inert beings. The second category comprises the invisible entity called Maaya. Maaya is like the computer game program that is invisible yet has the power to create infinitely complex universes over and over again. The first category is termed kshara or perishable, because the universe has a beginning and end. The second category is termed akshara or imperishable, because it outlives the perishable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So therefore, let’s examine this teaching from two standpoints. From our standpoint, the standpoint of the “I” – the kshara, the perishable is our physical body. The akshara, the imperishable is the jeeva, as defined in the previous shlokas. From the standpoint of the world, the standpoint of the “that” – the kshara is the visible universe. The akshara refers to Maaya, the seed of infinite universes, present, past and future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, in this context, the word k\u016b\u1e6dastha\u1e25 means unmanifest matter; maya tatvam. And since this maya is relatively eternal, it is k\u016b\u1e6dastha\u1e25. k\u016b\u1e6dastha\u1e25 means relatively eternal. k\u016b\u1e6dastha\u1e25 the unmanifest matter is ak\u1e63ara uchyat\u0113, means it is called ak\u1e63ara puru\u1e63a\u1e25. So in this sl\u014dka what has He said; manifest matter is k\u1e63ara puru\u1e63a\u1e25; unmanifest matter is ak\u1e63ara puru\u1e63a\u1e25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s now look at some of the terms used in the shloka. Koota means illusion, and therefore kootastha means that which can create several illusions. Another clarification is around the imperishability of Maaya. If Maaya is imperishable, how can we get out of it? The answer is that Maaya is imperishable till we realize our true nature and attain liberation. Each category is called a Purusha or a being because both of them are limitations and upaadhis of Ishvara, as we shall see in the next shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
