Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That in which the sun does not illumine, nor the moon, nor fire, that is my supreme abode. Having attained that, there is no return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the previous verse it was mentioned that the seekers who follow the four-fold disciplines will attain that undecaying padam, which is called Brahman, which is the root of the universe. Now in this verse, Krishna says what is the nature of that Brahman; which is the destination of the seekers; which is the substratum of the universe; what is the nature of the substratum, destination Brahman? Substratum- cum- destination Brahman; what is its nature?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna listed the qualifications of a seeker in the prior shloka and asserted that one who takes his refuge will attain his abode. He now provides the location, the address of that abode. He says that there is no sun, no moon, no fire, in other words, no source of light in his abode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, this verse is based on a well- known upani\u1e63ad mantra, which occurs both in the Mundaka upani\u1e63ad and Kath\u014dpani\u1e63ad and it is so well known that it is used in all the temples regularly, at the time of deeparadhana. And you know what is that mantra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially we will feel a little frightened if we take the literal meaning of this shloka. Even cavemen were able to access some light source in the form of the sun, the moon, or fire from a wooden torch. Why would anyone want to go to such a place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The essence is Brahman cannot be objectified by any instrument of knowledge. Brahman is not objectifiable through any instrument of knowledge. Brahman cannot be illumined by anything. And to convey this idea, the Upani\u1e63ad uses the example of light. Light in V\u0113d\u0101nta is that in whose presence things are known. In V\u0113d\u0101nta, light means that in whose presence things are known. For example, this is called light, because in its presence I am able to know you are seated in front. Imagine light goes away; I will not know whether you are continuing to sit or quietly walk off. I won’t know. Therefore, light is that in whose presence things are known and keeping this definition, the upani\u1e63ads mention or point out that every sense organ can be compared to a light. Every sense organ can be compared to a light, because sense organ is that in whose presence things are known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sun, the moon and fire have symbolic interpretations which are extremely relevant here. The sun is the presiding deity of our intellect, the moon of our mind and emotions, and fire of our physiological functions. The one who has sought refuge in Ishvara automatically gives up affinity to his body, mind, intellect, ego (which resides in the intellect) and physiological functions. If this affinity, the root of all our sorrow, is given up, such a person will never again get caught in the wheel of birth of death, in the cycle of samsaara. This is liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So then, this is the abode of Ishvara, of self-realization, of liberation. Having reached there, the liberated person does not come back to the state of ignorance. He never gets deluded again. He never identifies or develops affinity with body, mind, intellect and the world. The duality, the pairs of opposites, the dvandva that was mentioned before, is nothing but the world. For such a person, neither joy nor sorrow, neither pain nor pleasure, neither friend nor enemy, nothing can destabilize him. This is liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, Brahman is not an object of knowledge. Brahman exists. This is the quiz programme. Kaun Banega Crorepati. Brahman is not an object of knowledge. At the same time, Brahman exists; What is that brahman? You can have only one answer, if Brahman exists, and if it is not an object, there can be only one answer, what is that? It is the very subject; it is very conscious being, which objectifies everything, but which can never be objectified. Which is the experiencer of everything, but which is never experienced. It is this seer of everything but never seen. The unseen seer; the unseen hearer, the unsmelled smeller; the untasted taster, the untouched toucher; these are all not my expressions. These are all upani\u1e63adic expressions. adr\u0325\u1e63\u1e6do dra\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e25, asr\u0325to srot\u0101, amato manto, avijj\u0101t\u014d vijnat\u0101. This is the definition given in the Brihadarnyaka upani\u1e63ad. In short, Brahman is the consciousness- principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
