Know that surely, both Prakriti and Purusha are without beginning. Also, know that in fact, all modifications and qualities are born of Prakriti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna has completed four topics out of six topics. Topics completed are K\u1e63etra\u1e41, k\u1e63\u0113traj\u00f1a, J\u00f1\u0101nam and J\u00f1\u0113yam. Remaining two prakr\u0325ti and puru\u1e63a\u1e25 is now taken up by him. Verses 20-24 is puru\u1e63ah and prakr\u0325ti. And this puru\u1e63ah and prakr\u0325ti are very much similar to K\u1e63\u0113tra\u1e41 and k\u1e63\u0113traj\u00f1a. And in the seventh chapter, Krishna used the word para prakr\u0325ti and apara prakr\u0325ti, para prakr\u0325ti being consciousness and apara prakr\u0325ti being matter. Now the same Krishna is discussing again in the name of puru\u1e63a and prakr\u0325ti; puru\u1e63a means caitanya tatvam; the independent- consciousness- principle and prakr\u0325ti means the matter- principle. The fundamental basic invisible matter, which can be compared to energy. Compared to energy. Energy is invisible version of matter. And these two, Krishna is going to talk about in the following verses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we can understand the word Puru\u1e63ah as Brahman and we can understand the prakr\u0325ti as M\u0101ya and therefore the discussion is regarding Brahman and M\u0101ya of the upani\u1e63ad. These two words puru\u1e63a and prakr\u0325ti are generally used in Sa\u1e45kya philosophy, but rarely in V\u0113d\u0101nta also, we use the word puru\u1e63a and prakr\u0325ti for Brahman and M\u0101ya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjuna, may you understand puru\u1e63a and prakr\u0325ti as the two basic principles which are beginningless- principles. An\u0101di means without a beginning, and it is in dual number which means puru\u1e63a is also An\u0101di, prakr\u0325ti is also An\u0101di. And this puru\u1e63ah- prakr\u0325ti mixture alone we call \u012a\u015bvara\u1e25. Prakr\u0325ti plus puru\u1e63ah is equal to \u012a\u015bvara\u1e25. Brahman plus M\u0101ya is equal to \u012a\u015bvara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First common feature is: both of them are beginningless. And the second one is that both are together cause of the universe. exactly like the father and mother. Father by himself cannot be the cause of a child, mother by herself can never be the cause of a child; father and mother alone can together enjoy the causal status. And that is why jagatapitharau vand\u0113 parvathi param\u0113svarau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And these two principals have got uncommon features also. What is the first difference between puru\u1e63a and prakr\u0325ti? Puru\u1e63a is c\u0113tana tatvam; it is consciousness-principle; whereas prakr\u0325ti or M\u0101ya is ac\u0113tana tatvam, it is the basic matter principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second difference is the puru\u1e63a is nirvik\u0101ra tatvam; consciousness principle is not subject to modification or change. It is ever the changeless principle, time cannot influence consciousness. Time cannot touch consciousness. Consciousness is not within the field of time. In fact, some scientists themselves are saying this. Whereas prakr\u0325ti or matter principle is subject to time and therefore subject to modification; in Sanskrit savik\u0101ra tatvam. So c\u0113tana tatvam-ac\u0113tana tatvam is the first difference; nirvik\u0101ra tatvam-savik\u0101ra-tatvam is the second difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And because of the influence of time alone, matter is violently undergoing change, even becoming energy is a form of change; matter becomes energy. In fact in an atomic explosion; in a nuclear explosion, what is happening is, matter is converted into tremendous energy. And therefore, matter is subject to change to energy form; energy is subject to change into matter form; and within matter itself, it violently undergoes change; the sun is changing violently, the planets are changing and even the minutest atom is undergoing change. Therefore, savik\u0101ra tatvam. And the other one nirvik\u0101ra tatvam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the third important difference or uncommon feature is that Puru\u1e63a, the consciousness principle is free from all attributes. It is absolutely property-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you enumerate the properties as satva rajas tam\u014d gu\u1e47a, then we say consciousness is free from all these three. If you enumerate the properties as \u015babda, spar\u015ba, r\u016bpa, rasa and gandha, \u015babda means sound, spar\u015ba, means touch, r\u016bpa means form, rasa means taste, gandha means smell; then consciousness is free from all these five properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, consciousness is property- less- attributeless. In Sanskrit Nirgu\u1e47a tatvam. Whereas matter is endowed with all the properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then comes the fourth and final property for our discussion. You can have several but four only for our discussion. This is technical thing, which is not directly relevant, but for future questions this will be required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what is that difference? C\u0113tana or the consciousness- principle has got an independent existence and therefore it is said to be satya tatvam. The existence of consciousness is intrinsic, it is independent, it is unborrowed. That is why we say, cit \u0113va sat. And therefore, it is satya tatvam; whereas the matter principle does not have an independent existence; the existence of matter depends upon the consciousness principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even to prove that you are all studying Geeta, you have conscious while studying. If your conscious is not with you, your studying Geeta cannot be stated merely joining of WhatsApp group. And therefore, the existence of a thing, a material thing, depends upon the consciousness principle and therefore matter enjoys or suffers dependent existence. In Sanskrit we call it mithy\u0101 tatvam. Satyam and mithy\u0101.  we will deal later for the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are the four fundamental differences between Puru\u1e63a and Prakr\u0325ti. Such a puru\u1e63a-prakr\u0325ti mixture called God was there even before the origination of the world. And the most interesting thing is, that when we say God alone existed before the creation, we cannot even answer the question, where was He located.  because, before creation, even \u0101k\u0101\u015ba was not there. \u0100k\u0101\u015ba comes only after creation. How do you know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even scientists point out that you cannot imagine space at the time of or before the big bang. How they have reached V\u0113d\u0101nta. They will say V\u0113d\u0101nta has borrowed Science. Long before science came, it has been said. Therefore, you cannot conceive of even space (akasa), before Sr\u0325i\u1e63\u1e6di.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, when I talk about God before the origination of space, how can I talk about the location of God, because the concept of location requires space? Therefore, do not ask where He was. And such an unlocatable God who is a mixture of Puru\u1e63a and Prakr\u0325ti was there before Sr\u0325i\u1e63\u1e6di.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puru\u1e63a and Prakr\u0325ti, nothing will happen to puru\u1e63a tattvam, because puru\u1e63a tatvam is not conditioned by time and therefore Puru\u1e63a, the c\u0113tana tatvam will remain the same. Before Sr\u0325i\u1e63\u1e6di; during Sr\u0325i\u1e63\u1e6di, after pralayam, all the time, chaitanyam is Nirvik\u0101ram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All modifications and qualities are born out of Prakriti. Maaya and prakriti refer to the same thing. Prakriti is a power wielded by Ishvara. It is beyond the comprehension of our intellect since our intellect itself is a product of Prakriti. The only way to understand Prakriti is to think of it as a magician\u2019s illusion. This Prakriti gives rise to five elements that produce the entire visible universe. These combinations or modifications of Prakriti are termed as \u201cvikaaraas\u201d. Prakriti also comprises the three \u201cgunaas\u201d or qualities which are sattva, rajas and tamas. These qualities manifest as mental states such as happiness, sorrow and attachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, if we go back in time, if we press the rewind button, we will see that everything merges back into Prakriti, everything has come from Prakriti. Now, let us get practical. Whenever we experience emotions such as sorrow, grief, anger and so on, it is Prakriti that creates it, not the self, not the “I”. This is what was explained in the shloka. But, when anger arises in our mind, for instance, we always say “I am angry”. How do we come to the conclusion that the “I” is angry when it is Prakriti that created the anger? This is taken up next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
