Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The great elements, the ego, the intellect, the unmanifest, and also the ten senses, and the one, and five objects of senses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desire, hatred, joy, sorrow, assembly, awareness, fortitude. This field with its modifications has been illustrated in brief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our tradition, all the philosophers have analysed the objective universe and categorised them into various divisions. In Sanskrit they are called tatv\u0101ni. Tatv\u0101 means category and therefore all the philosophers, we have got mainly 12 branches of philosophy in Our tradition; all of them try to categorise the universe into various tatv\u0101ms; Vai\u1e63\u0113\u1e63ika <\/strong>philosophy, has divided the whole creation into seven tatv\u0101s. Nyaya<\/strong> philosophy has divided into 16 tatv\u0101s. S\u0101\u1e45kya<\/strong> philosophy has divided the whole objective universe into twenty- four tatv\u0101s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And here Vy\u0101s\u0101c\u0101rya temporarily borrows from S\u0101\u1e45kya philosophy and he categories the universe into 24 tatv\u0101ms or catagories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first basic matter principle they call Prakr\u0325ti means nature.<\/strong> During pralaya destruction, before the evolution of the universe, before the emergence of the universe, it was in potential form, that potential form of the universe they call Prakr\u0325ti\u1e25.  If you want to understand in scientific language, the condition just before the Big Bang. The condition before Big Bang. Then they say, the Prakr\u0325ti evolves partially and the first stage of evolution they call mahat tatv\u0101m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prakr\u0325ti, then mahat; so Mahat is also total matter in the first stage of evolution. Then buddhi\u1e25 intellect means the mahat tatv\u0101m, the second stage; buddhi\u1e25 careful note, not the individual intellect, but buddhi\u1e25 is the cosmic intellect<\/strong>, the mahat tatv\u0101m, the second stage; Then ahamk\u0101ra, is the cosmic ego the third stage; avyaktham, buddhi\u1e25, ahamk\u0101ra\u1e25, (three) And then from ahamkara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the other 16 items; what are they? Mah\u0101bh\u016bt\u0101ni. mah\u0101bh\u016bt\u0101ni means the 5 subtle elements: \u0101k\u0101\u015ba, v\u0101yu, agni, \u0101pa\u1e25, pritvi; i.e.space, air, fire, water and earth; in their subtle form; subtle form means invisible form. In Tatv\u0101 bodha we have dealt with this. And then indriy\u0101\u1e47i means the ten sense organs: da\u015ba indriy\u0101\u1e47i. Krishna himself says: da\u015ba indriy\u0101\u1e47i, mah\u0101bh\u016bt\u0101ni, how much 15, ekam means the mind, mana\u1e25 tatv\u0101m, the cosmic mind; so mah\u0101bh\u016bt\u0101ni, da\u015ba indriy\u0101\u1e47i, \u0113kam, these are the 16 tatv\u0101s at the third stage. And then comes the fourth stage; pa\u00f1ca c\u0113ndriyag\u014dcar\u0101\u1e25, indriya  g\u014dcar\u0101\u1e25 means the stule bhutani; the five gross elements; thus 1+1+1+16+5; this is the addition; If you add it will be 24 tatvams; all of them, come under K\u1e63etra\u1e41.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And not only that. These 24 tatvams do not remain changeless, they constantly undergo change and as a result of their change and interaction, various properties are generated. And they are called the various gu\u1e47\u0101s or vik\u0101ras of the K\u1e63etra\u1e41; and what are the generated properties? Krishna enumerates them in the next sl\u014dk\u0101 7. This is the explanation of the yadvik\u0101ri yata\u015bca yat. In the fourth verse, Krishna had promised yadvik\u0101ri yata\u015bca yat; what are the various products of the K\u1e63etra\u1e41 I will tell; now he gives the product and what are they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now look at the sl\u014dk\u0101. sa\u1e45gh\u0101ta\u1e25 c\u0113tan\u0101 c\u0113tan\u0101. Sa\u1e45gh\u0101ta\u1e25 means what, the body mind complex is called sa\u1e45gh\u0101ta\u1e25, and c\u0113tan\u0101 means borrowed sentiency. Like the k\u1e63\u0113traj\u00f1a is like the Sun; mind is like the mirror and borrowed consciousness is like the reflected Sun. And in V\u0113d\u0101nta it is called cidabh\u0101sa; or cit prathibhi\u1e41ba or prathibhi\u1e41ba caitanyam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wherever the reflecting medium is present And reflecting medium is K\u1e63etra\u1e41, and therefore the reflection also must be part of K\u1e63etra\u1e41 only. Very careful, original consciousness is not part of K\u1e63etra\u1e41; but the reflected consciousness becomes part of the K\u1e63etra\u1e41; means the material universe. And therefore, Krishna says sa\u1e45gh\u0101ta\u1e25, the body- mind- complex, chetana, the borrowed consciousness, therefore the mind has become a live mind, and therefore the mind is able to experience the world and moment the mind becomes a live mind, capable of experiencing the world, the job of the mind is to categorise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has started. icch\u0101 means r\u0101ga, I develop attachment towards a segment of the universe. And not only r\u0101ga\u1e25, but the other side of the coin is also what; dv\u0113\u1e63a\u1e25 means haterate. Bhagavan has created only a neutral world, but I cover the world with my coloration; and I always see a colored world, world like a person wearing a colour glass and he says that everything is dark. Similarly, r\u0101ga\u1e25 and dv\u0113\u1e63a\u1e25 are the colored glasses born by the mind; and it always lives in its own private world. then what is the next consequence? Sukham, du\u1e25kham; happiness or misery the desirable world produces sukha\u1e43 du\u1e25kha\u1e43. The undesirable world also produces sukha\u1e43 and this capacity of the world is not intrinsic. The world has no capacity to give joy or sorrow. But when I classify the world as favourable and unfavourable; world gains the capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, the whole world is a pad\u0101rtha\u1e25, but I convert the pad\u0101rtha\u1e25 world into a Vi\u1e63aya\u1e25; Vi\u1e63aya\u1e25 is derived from the root, vi + \u1e63i; si root 5th conjugation parasmai pada, sinothi sinutha, sinvanthi, iti rup\u0101ni, vi is the prefix, vi sinothi iti Vi\u1e63aya\u1e25; That which binds you is called Vi\u1e63aya\u1e25. What do we do? we convert the whole world of K\u1e63etra\u1e41 into a Vi\u1e63aya\u1e25 by developing r\u0101ga\u1e25 and dv\u0113\u1e63a\u1e25 and making the world capable of giving sukha\u1e43 and du\u1e25kha\u1e43.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then dh\u1e5bti\u1e25; dh\u1e5bti\u1e25 means will power. Because once we have classified the world as the cause of sorrow and happiness, then you use your will power to acquire the so-called object of joy, which is called pravr\u0325thi<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desire, hatred, joy and sorrow are modifications or changes in the inner instrument, the antahakarana. The antahakarana always wants to create a sense of wholeness or completeness out of the diversity of limbs, hair, nerves, nails etc that make up one body. But it also wants to keep this collection of what it calls the body distinct from everything else in the world. This notion of completeness is called \u201csanghaata\u201d meaning assembly, and the will to preserve the assembly and keep it distinct from the world is called \u201cdhriti\u201d or fortitude. All biological desires arise from this desire to maintain the body as a distinct single entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now we come to the modification of the antahakarana that gives it the quality of awareness and sentiency, known as \u201cchetanaa\u201d or awareness. Though we may be tempted to think that this sentiency in the antahakarana is the soul, the aatmaa, the eternal essence, it is not. It is a borrowed kind of awareness caused by a reflection of the eternal essence in the antahakarana, just like a pot filled with water reflects the sun in it. In fact, chetanaa and the six other modifications mentioned in this shloka are variously assumed to be the eternal essence by various schools of philosophy. Shri Krishna asserts that everything mentioned in this shloka and the prior shloka is not the eternal essence. It is kshetra, the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
