To whom praise and insult are same, who is silent, content with anything, who is without a home, with unwavering mind, a person who is such a devotee is dear to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna continues summarizing the twelfth chapter in this shloka by listing further attributes of the perfected devotee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take praise and reproach alike<\/strong>.  For those who are externally motivated, the appreciation and rejection by others is all- important.  However, devotees are internally motivated by the principles they value within themselves.  Hence, neither commendation nor denunciation by others makes any difference to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given to silent contemplation.<\/strong>  Crows and swans have diametrically opposite choices.  While crows are drawn to garbage piles, the majestic swans are attracted by tranquil lakes. Similarly, the minds of worldly people find great relish in conversing about materialistic topics.  But the saintly devotees possess pure minds, and thus worldly talks seem as attractive to them as a pile of garbage.  This does not mean that they do not converse.  Like the swan drawn to the lakes, their minds are drawn toward topics such as the Names, Forms, Pastimes, and Glories of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Content with whatever comes their way.<\/strong>  The needs of the devotees shrink to the bare necessities for maintaining the body.  Saint Kabir expresses this in his famous couplet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cO Lord, give me just enough for the bare maintenance of my family\u2019s bodily needs, and for giving alms to the sadhu who comes to my door.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without attachment to the place of residence.<\/strong>  No earthly home can be a permanent residence for the soul, for it must necessarily be left behind at the time of death.  When the Mogul Emperor, Akbar, built his capital, Fatehpur Sikri, he put the following inscription on the main entrance gate: \u201cThe world is a bridge; cross over it but build no house on it.\u201d  In the same vein, Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLive in this world as a traveller lives in a wayside inn (aware that it is to be vacated the next morning).\u201d (R\u0101dh\u0101 Govind Geet)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Realizing the truth of this statement, devotees look on their home as only a temporary dwelling place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intellect is firmly fixed in Me.  Devotees have deep conviction in the supremacy of God\u2019s position in creation and in their eternal relationship with Him.  They are also firm in their faith that if they surrender to Him lovingly, by God\u2019s grace they will achieve the highest realization.  Hence, they neither wander from attraction- to- attraction or from path- to- path.  Shree Krishna declares such resolute devotees to be very dear to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ocean is not affected whether it gets a torrential downpour or no rain at all. It happily accepts whatever comes its way because it is content with itself. Similarly, the devotee is content in his constant devotion to Ishvara, and therefore accepts whatever comes his way without any complaint. The devotee also does not have an attitude of possession towards anything, including his home. Like the wind that comes and goes anywhere as it pleases, the devotee considers the entire world his home and is attached his house, his physical body, his mind, his intellect, or his desires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we proceed along the path of devotion, we will notice that our mind shifts between giving reality to the world as part of Ishvara and giving reality to the world as separate from Ishvara. As long as we give reality to the world as an independent entity, we can never get rid of our unfulfilled desires, and the attachment to the world that results from those desires. A perfected devotee is one whose mind is fixed on giving reality to the world as a part of Ishvara, giving up all selfish desires in the process. Shri Krishna says that a person who harbours all these attributes is fit to be called a naraha, a human being, in the true sense of the world. Such a devoted person is very dear to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
