Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One who is without expectation, pure, dextrous, unconcerned, fearless, renouncing all new initiatives, he who is such a devotee of mine, he is dear to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the previous shloka, Shri Krishna explained the attitude of the perfected devotee when dealing with other people. Now, he explains the perfected devotee\u2019s attitude towards action.<\/strong> It is not a surprise to us that the perfect devotee is also a perfect karma yogi. He has understood the art of performing any action, big or small, in line with Shri Krishna\u2019s teaching of karma yoga, thereby achieving perfection in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) Indifferent to worldly gains: <\/strong>The one who is not emotionally dependent on any external factors to be happy and since he is not dependent on external factors; absolutely there are no expectations also. Dependence is expressed in the form of expectation. freedom from dependence result to expectations. expectations mean freedom from disappointments. Therefore, ultimately freedom from frustrations in life is possible only when I do not have any form of expectations. Expectations need not be on things only. Even if I expect a person to behave in a particular way; that is a form of expectation. If at all you want to have expectations; \u015a\u0101stra says let those expectations be non- binding expectations; by which what we mean is: If it is fulfilled; wonderful; if it is not fulfilled also; I am willing to take that. Oh Lord; this is my preference; if this happens, I will be very happy; if it does not happen also, I am willing to accept. Therefore, developing the mental strength to hope for the best; and be prepared for the worst also. We should be totally free from disappointment; disappointments are natural; but the capacity to come out of it is inner strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) Externally and internally pure:<\/strong> Then the next word is suchi\u1e25; suchi\u1e25 means the one who is clean; externally and internally. So j\u00f1\u0101ni does not mean that he should be careless about things. So, the one who is clean externally and internally; externally means the place he stays, the dress he wears, etc. and more than external cleanliness is: internal cleanliness; that means thoughts are in keeping with dharma; is \u015buci\u1e25 means near and clear without any doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) Without care;<\/strong> Then the next word: ud\u0101s\u012bna\u1e25; ud\u0101s\u012bna\u1e25 literally means indifference; but this word has got a negative connotation. So, we should not take in that sense; here ud\u0101s\u012bna\u1e25 or indifferent means, the one who is not partial; an impartial person; the one who does not belong to any groupism. Society is full of groupism; politics; there are 10 people; then 3 people will join and form a group; and often the topic is what is going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4) Untroubled;<\/strong> Then gatavyatha\u1e25; the one who is free from sorrow; whatever be the type of experience that he faces; he knows that we do not have control over our experiences. Even the greatest j\u00f1\u0101ni does not have control over his experiences because experiences are determined by d\u0113\u015ba(place), k\u0101la (time) and pr\u0101rabdha (luck). So, in winter, it will be cold; in summer, it will be hot; during rainy seasons, rain will be there. These are all depending upon d\u0113\u015ba and k\u0101la; nobody can control; and there is the third factor called pr\u0101rabdha. Even j\u00f1\u0101ni’s life is governed by pr\u0101rabdha and therefore pr\u0101rabdha brings favourable as well as unfavourable situations. J\u00f1\u0101nam does not make all the situations favourable. So let us not have such an expectation: “After j\u00f1\u0101nam all situations will be converted into favourable situations”. It is not. V\u0113d\u0101nta cannot change the world and situations; V\u0113d\u0101nta will help me in developing a healthy attitude towards all situations. So, the change will not be external, but the change will be in my attitude towards situations. And therefore, my question is why people behave like that is not a question. Why death happens is not questioned; why robbery happens is not the question; why people leave me is not the question. My question is: from such an experience what spiritual lesson have I to learn? I may ask hundreds of other questions. Better not ask; even if you ask other questions; the final most important fundamental question is even if it is the most tragic experience; what valid spiritual lesson I am supposed to learn from this. And when I ask this question; I will find that from tragic experiences only, the reality, we learn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, Arjuna himself learnt the lesson, that he requires Bhagavad G\u012bt\u0101. When did he learn; when he faced the tragic situation of killing his own kith and kin; wonderful Bhagavat G\u012bt\u0101 \u015b\u0101stram. And that is why even sorrow becomes a spiritual s\u0101dana. The first chapter is titled Arjuna vi\u1e63\u0101da y\u014dga\u1e25; we have heard karma y\u014dga and bhakthi y\u014dga; first chapter is called vi\u1e63\u0101da y\u014dga,; That means what even sorrow is a spiritual s\u0101dan\u0101, if I am willing to learn a spiritual lesson from even the most sorrowful experience; and therefore from j\u00f1\u0101ni’s angle, no experience is unwelcome; he welcomes all experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, gatavyatha\u1e25 he is free from negative reactions called “Why me?”; Why me reactions; all the other people are having gala time; you think that; go and interview them. If your story is R\u0101maya\u1e47am; their story is Mahabh\u0101ratham; but we always feel that everybody is having a good time. And Bhagav\u0101n is specially selecting the experiences for me. So, there is no why me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5) *Skillful;”<\/strong> Devotees look on all their tasks as opportunities to serve God.  Hence, they perform their works with great care and attention.  This naturally makes them skillful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6) Free from selfishness in all undertakings.<\/strong>  Their attitude of service makes them rise above petty selfishness.Then sarv\u0101rambhaparity\u0101g\u012b; the one who has given up all the \u0101ramba; \u0101ramba means binding actions; karma; bandaka karm\u0101ni and therefore he is called prabhakath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With no mental agitations caused by future expectations or past anxiety, the karma yogi performs actions with great dexterity and fearlessness. \u201cYogaha karmasu kaushalam\u201d – dexterity in action is karma yoga as we saw in the second chapter. The karma yogi devotes all his attention and brings great focus to the task at hand, keeping all distractions aside. He also performs the work as an emissary of Ishvara, which removes any notion of fear, hesitation or doubt from his mind. Shri Krishna says that this type of devotee, the perfected karma yogi, is very dear to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
