One who performs actions for me, considers me as supreme, is devoted to me, is free from attachment and without enmity towards all beings, that person attains me, O Paandava.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do we get as a reward for studying one of the longest chapters of the Gita? It is this concluding shloka of the eleventh chapter which Shankaraachaarya considers the essence of the entire Bhagavad Gita. Shri Krishna says that Isvara can be attained by following five guidelines: perform actions for the sake of Ishvara, fix Ishvara as the ultimate goal, observe single- pointed devotion to Ishvara, remain free from worldly attachments, do not harbour likes or dislikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, he concludes this chapter by highlighting five characteristics of those who are engaged in exclusive devotion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.They perform all their duties for my sake. Accomplished devotees do not divide their works into material and spiritual. They perform every work for the pleasure of God, thus consecrating every act of theirs to him. The Saint Kabir states:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I walk, I think I am circumambulating the Lord; when I work, I think I am serving the Lord; and when I sleep, I think I am offering him obeisance. In this manner, I perform no activity other than that which is offered to him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.They depend upon me. Those who rely upon their spiritual practices to reach God are not exclusively dependent upon him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.They are devoted to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.They are free of attachment. Devotion requires the engagement of the mind. This is only possible if the mind is detached from the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.They are without malice toward all beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, all five steps are interconnected and strengthen each other. The mind cannot fully detach itself from everything. Like a child that drops attachment to toys and is attached to higher ideals as an adult, Shri Krishna advises us to drop attachments to material things and develop attachment for Ishvara. When we begin to see everything as Ishvara, and see ourselves as part of Ishvara, we will not generate feelings of dislike towards anyone or anything, just like we do not have enmity towards any part of our own body. This is the theme of this chapter, where the individual essence sees itself as part of the universal eternal essence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
