Seeing you with dreadful tusks and your mouths blazing like fires of destruction, I neither know the directions nor do I have peace. Be pleased, O lord whose abode is the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we go beyond the imagery of this shloka and try to extract the meaning, we find that Arjuna comes face to face with a point of no return.  The universal form that Arjun beholds is just another aspect of Shree Krishna\u2019s personality and is non-different from him. And yet, the vision of it has dried up the camaraderie that Arjun was previously experiencing toward Shree Krishna, and he is overcome with fear. Seeing the many wondrous and amazingly frightful manifestations of the Lord. He is unable to “know the directions”, unable to decide where to run away from here. All the plans he has made to do this or that thing are suddenly no more. Many people who come face to face with their mortality may have thoughts similar to what Arjuna is echoing here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because according to the scriptures at the time of pralaya, the whole creation is gradually dissolved; and there are five elements; \u0101k\u0101\u015ba; v\u0101yu; agni; jalam; pr\u0325ithvi. These five elements are created in a particular order; \u0101k\u0101\u015ba; v\u0101yu; agni; jalam; pr\u0325ithvi; at the time of pralayam; the resolution takes place in a reverse order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So vipraryaya\u1e25 atha\u1e25; That means what everything is supposed to be in pr\u0325ithvi tatvam; pr\u0325ithvi the earth principle is dissolved in jala tatvam; that is the pralaya; and jalam is supposed to be resolved in agni tatvam; and that agni and that agni is called pralaya k\u0101la agni which absorbs everything including the fourteen l\u014dk\u0101s. Hence, when destruction starts, there is no direction for the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prayer is only possible when there is utter surrender of individuality. Arjun is now scared and thinks that Shree Krishna is angry with him. So, he asks for mercy.
