Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjuna said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O Lord, I see deities as well as special classes of beings in your body. Brahma, the lord, seated upon a lotus, and all the sages and divine serpents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whenever our emotions are running high, we either keep quiet or speak non- stop. Arjuna now comes out of his silence and speaks at a fast pace to describe what he sees in front of him. The meter of this shloka has changed to indicate the change in pace. Traditionally, these shlokas are also chanted at a slightly faster speed to get their full flavour. So what does Arjuna see?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjuna says that he sees all kinds of deities and other kinds of beings, which include Lord Brahma seated upon a lotus, as well as the divine sages and divine serpents. The sages include the sapta- rishis such as Vashishtha and the serpents include Vasuki. We had come across these and other beings in the prior chapter when Ishvara himself described his divine manifestations. But Arjuna does not see all of these in different places. He sees them all situated on Ishvara\u2019s cosmic form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does this indicate? The sages live on earth, the deities live in a higher plane, and serpents live in yet another plane. Arjuna realizes that he is seeing worlds that beyond the earth and beyond the human capacity of vision. He also saw Lord Brahma who, according to Srimad Bhagavatam, arose out the navel of Lord Vishnu and created all the worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, Arjuna in the cosmic form, saw the creator and his creation. More importantly, he realized that Ishvara was beyond the process creation, which he had learned in the eighth chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, when Arjuna experiences the Vi\u015bva r\u016bpa, he goes through several emotional faces; his responses are different; and we find three stages in Arjuna’s response to Vi\u015bva r\u016bpa. The first and foremost reaction or response is vismaya\u1e25 or ascaryam; in fact the world is an ascaryam if you learn to objectively appreciate the world; the world loses its ascaryathvam, the moment you look at the world from your own private standpoint and this private vision is in the \u015b\u0101stra as j\u012bva dri\u1e63\u1e6di; subjective coloured vision; And the j\u012bva sri\u1e63\u1e6di alone expresses in the form of r\u0101ga and dv\u0113\u1e63a; k\u0101ma and kr\u014ddha\u1e25; ahamk\u0101ra and mamak\u0101ra; And therefore world can never give you wonderment. It can never give you the sense that Arjuna is getting now; Since Krishna has removed the obstacle from Arjuna’s mind, Arjuna is no more is in j\u012bva sri\u1e63\u1e6di; he is in the public \u012a\u015bvara’s world, which is wonderful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
