For, I have heard about the creation and dissolution of all beings, elaborately, from you O lotus-eyed one, and also about your imperishable glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjuna, ever the good student, uses this shloka to summarize Shri Krishna\u2019s teaching. He acknowledges that he has understood the essence of the teaching, which asserts Ishvara as the creator, maintainer and dissolution of the entire universe. In other words, there is no other cause of the universe besides Ishvara. He is both the raw material and the intelligence behind the universe. This \u201cmahaatmyam\u201d or glory was further reinforced in Arjuna\u2019s mind by hearing the divine expressions of Ishvara from Shri Krishna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the above verse, Arjun implies, \u201cO Shree Krishna, I have heard from you about your imperishable majestic glories. Although you are present within all, you are untainted by their imperfections. Although you are the supreme controller, yet you are the non-doer and are not responsible for our actions. Although you bestow the results of our karmas, you are impartial and equal to all. You are the supreme witness and the dispenser of the results of our actions. I thus conclude that you are the object of adoration of all beings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lord is the cause of the universe. Lord as the very material cause of the universe, which means, the Lord is the basic stuff out of whom the universe has evolved. The technical points one should remember; material cause is the cause of sr\u0325i\u1e63ti stiti layam; just as ocean is the material cause of the waves; So, waves are born out of ocean; rests in the ocean and resolves in to the ocean. That means what? If waves are born out of the ocean and resolves into the ocean, what is the conclusion I get; there are no waves separate from the ocean. In fact, waves is only an additional name given to the very ocean itself; similarly the whole creation is like a wave in the ocean of God; So the entire cosmos of several billions of galaxies is nothing but bubbles. So, each galaxy can be compared to a small bubble and all these bubbles of galaxies are rising from whom; up\u0101d\u0101n\u0113:’khil\u0101dh\u0101r\u0113; and there are no bubbles separate from ocean. Similarly, there is no creation separate from God or to put in another language; God is in the form of world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, by addressing Shri Krishna as \u201clotus- eyed\u201d, Arjuna also reveals his understanding of another aspect of Ishvara. Like the lotus that does not get affected by the attributes of its pond, Ishvara does not get personally involved in the workings of the universe. He is impartial to everyone in the granting of results, liberation and bondage. He remains as the \u201cavyayam\u201d or imperishable foundation upon which the mechanical Prakriti projects the multitude of names and forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, there is a hint of dissatisfaction expressed by Arjuna in this shloka. Even though he has understood the teaching from Ishvara himself, resolved his doubts, and also learnt the techniques of karma yoga and dhyana yoga or meditation, he needs one more thing. What is that? He divulges it in the next shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
