There is no end to my divine expressions, O scorcher of foes. For, what has been spoken of my expressions is (just) an indicator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna, speaking as Ishvara, began enumerating his divine expressions in the beginning of this chapter. As we have seen so far, he has highlighted the most glorious, powerful and awe-inspiring aspects of his creation. In this shloka, he admits that it is next to impossible to list every single aspect of creation. But he also asserts that every single aspect of creation is divine, since it has sprung out of Ishvara himself. He told that “I have stopped the enumeration of My glories, not because my glories have been exhausted. If I have to enumerate all the glories the list is inexhaustible.” Since, there is no end to divine glory. It can never be exhausted by Krishna himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question can be asked that if everything is the opulence of God, then what was the need of mentioning these? The answer is that Arjun had asked Shree Krishna how he should think of him, and these glories have been described in response to Arjun\u2019s question. The mind is naturally drawn to specialties, and thus, the Lord has revealed these specialties amongst his powers. Whenever we see a special splendor manifesting anywhere, if we look on it as God\u2019s glory, then our mind will naturally be transported to him. In the larger scheme of things, however, since God\u2019s glories are in all things big and small, one can think of the whole world as providing innumerable examples for enhancing our devotion. A paint company in India would advertise, \u201cWhenever you see colors think of us.\u201d In this case, Shree Krishna\u2019s statement is tantamount to saying, \u201cWherever you see a manifestation of glory, think of me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us go back to the example of Mr. X and his shiny new car. The seed of sorrow was planted the minute he started considering that \u201cthe car is mine\u201d. Instead, if Mr. X thinks that the car is Ishvara\u2019s creation, he will immediately drop his sense of \u201cmine-ness\u201d from it. Furthermore, he realizes that the car is a temporary object and will eventually cease to exist. He also comes to know that the sense of joy he derives from buying a new car is not from the car, but it is from the presence of Ishvara inside it. So if something happens to the car, he remains unaffected and unperturbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now having gone through the list, we find that a 21st century person like us has difficulty identifying with Puraanic glories that would have been familiar to Arjuna. How should we deal with this issue? Shri Krishna gives the answer in the next shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
