Among the Saamas I am Brihat-saama, also, among the poetic metres I am Gaayatri. Among the months I am Maargasheersha, and among the seasons I am spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, we came across the Saama Veda as one of Ishvara\u2019s manifestations. Within the Saama Veda, there is a chant called the Brihat- Saama mantra,<\/strong> an invocation that is sung for praising Lord Indra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brihad s\u0101ma is supposed to be a very auspicious mantra: it starts with au ho e thaavam iti havamahe; which is glorification of the Lord and the Lord being great and since this mantra is glorified the great Lord; it is called brihad s\u0101ma. It is not the mantra is big; mantra is relatively small only. only 2 minutes or 3 minutes chanting; even though the mantra is smaller; mantra is glorifying the Lord, who is the infinite one and therefore it is called Brihad s\u0101ma; Brihad\u012b\u015bvara sthavana s\u0101ma; Brihad\u012b\u015bvara temple you have called; why called Brihad\u012b\u015bvara; huge one; so this mantra glorifies the infinite Lord; it is called brihad s\u0101ma; a very popular one; among s\u0101ma v\u0113d\u012bs, Since it is Brihat, the most potent and powerful among the Saama Veda mantras, Shri Krishna terms it as a foremost expression of Ishvara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In prior chapters of the, we have seen the use of the poetic metre as a tool to emphasize the change in topic. Let us delve deeper into this. The Gita is composed in the \u201cAnushtup chandas\u201d . Chandas means metre. It is made up of 4 lines or padas, each comprising 8 syllables. For example, let us see a famous shloka: \u201cya-da-ya-da-hi-dharm-as-ya\u201d. It contains 8 syllables. There are 3 more lines like this. So we get 8 times 4 equals 32 syllables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gaayatri mantra is considered to be the root and essence of all Vedic mantras. It is composed in a metre of the same name. The Gaayatri metre is made up of 4 lines each comprising 6 syllables. The first line is \u201ctat-sa-vi-tur-vareni-yam\u201d. Therefore, the Gaayatri mantra as well as the associated metre, foremost among all the mantras, are Ishvara\u2019s expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sanskrit language, like other languages, has distinctive systems of rhymes and meters for writing poetry. The poetry of the Vedas is in many meters. Amongst these, the Gayatri meter is very attractive and melodious. A famous mantra set in this meter is the Gayatri mantra. It is also a deeply meaningful prayer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe meditate upon the Lord who is illuminating the three worlds and is worthy of our worship. He is the remover of all sins and the destroyer of ignorance. May he illumine our intellects in the proper direction.\u201d The Gayatri mantra is a part of the sacred thread ceremony for young males and is recited as a part of the daily rituals. The Devi Gayatri, the Rudra Gayatri, the Brahma Gayatri, the Paramhansa Gayatri, and several other Gayatri mantras are also found in the Vedas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, Shri Krishna elaborates upon weather and seasons. He says that among all the months, Ishvara is the month of Maargasheersha of the Indian calendar. It corresponds to the November- December time period and culminates in the festival of Makara Sankranti. The crops in the field are harvested at this time of the year. For these reasons it is often the favorite month of the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basant (spring season) is known as \u1e5bitu r\u0101ja, or the king of seasons. It is a time when nature seems to be euphorically bursting forth with life. Many festivals are celebrated in spring, epitomizing the joy that pervades the atmosphere. Thus, amongst the seasons, spring manifests God\u2019s opulence the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then goes on to say that among the seasons, Ishvara is Kusumaakara, which refers to spring, the flower- bearing season. Both Margasheersha and Kusumaakara are not too hot and not too cold. They are conducive to generating serenity in the mind, and that is why they are considered foremost expressions of Ishvara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
