So far, Shri Krishna just gave a taste of Ishvara\u2019s expressions. Arjuna clearly was relishing and enjoying hearing these expressions because he compared them to the sweetness of nectar. He wanted to hear them all over again. But this time, he would not be content with hearing so little. He requested Shri Krishna to give a detailed and elaborate description of Ishvara\u2019s expressions as well as yoga, the power of maaya that creates many expressions of the one Ishvara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjuna addressed Shri Krishna as \u201cJanaardana\u201d which has two meanings. \u201cArda\u201d means one who moves, or makes others move. Jana means people, and therefore Janaardana means one who moves people to heaven or hell, in other words, dispenses justice to evildoers. Another meaning of Janaardana is one whom people ask for prosperity and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjuna understood that the true nature of Shri Krishna was Ishvara. So, he says, “hey jan\u0101rdana! kathaya\u1e25; may you enumerate, narrate, enlist, what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0101tmana\u1e25 y\u014dgam”. Atma here is reflective pronoun, your own y\u014dga \u015bakti, potentiality, What potentiality? the potentiality to become the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arjun says, \u201c\u2026 hearing your nectar,\u201d instead of \u201c\u2026 hearing your words that are like nectar.\u201d He has omitted \u201cyour words that are like.\u201d This is a literary technique called ati\u015bhayokti, or hyperbole (statement of extreme expression), in which the subject of comparison is omitted.  He now cheers him, by saying bh\u016bya\u1e25 kathaya, \u201cOnce more! My thirst for hearing your glories is not satiated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now as far as amritam, nectar, is concerned, any narration or statement concerning Krishna is just like nectar. And this nectar can be perceived by practical experience. Modern stories, fiction and histories are different from the transcendental pastimes of the Lord in that one will tire of hearing mundane stories, but one never tires of hearing about Krishna. It is for this reason only that the history of the whole universe is replete with references to the pastimes of the incarnations of Godhead. The Puranas are histories of bygone ages that relate the pastimes of the various incarnations of the Lord. In this way the reading matter remains forever fresh, despite repeated readings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this shloka, Shri Krishna concluded his statements and requests. Starting with the next shloka, Shri Krishna will provide a total of 82 vibhootis or expressions of Ishvara. Most of these are drawn from the Indian Vedic and Puraanic tradition since Arjuna would be easily able to identify with and connect with those examples. We can try to look for similarities in the present time so that we are also able to connect with those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
