Now why Krishna enumerates striy\u0101\u1e25; vai\u015by\u0101\u1e25; \u015budr\u0101\u1e25? The first thing we should understand: Vedanta is primarily a pursuit of wisdom and wisdom is something which is connected with your mind and intellect only; it is connected with the s\u016bk\u1e63ma \u015bar\u012bram, it has nothing to do with the physical body. Physical body is not going to gain knowledge. Therefore whenever we are talking about qualifications or disqualification, we are not bothered about the physical personality; because physical personality has nothing to do with knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why in Tatva Bodha, when we talked about qualification, we did not talk about height, we did not talk about weight, we did not male or female gender; it was only said s\u0101dan\u0101 catu\u1e63\u1e6daya sampathi and all the qualifications are connected with what is the subtle body or the mind. Therefore when we talk about striy\u0101\u1e25; vai\u015by\u0101\u1e25; and \u015budr\u0101\u1e25; we should remember, it has nothing to do with the physical stritvam; physical vai\u015byatvam; or physical \u015budratvam; it is talking about three types of inner personality; we are not talking about whether a person is physically women  or physically man. Then we have to find out what type of personality is meant by stri? What type of personality is meant by vaisya? And what type of personality is meant by \u015budra?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will use the word svabh\u0101va stritvam; svabh\u0101va vai\u015byatvam; and svabh\u0101va  \u015budratvam; not \u015bar\u012bra stritvam; \u015bar\u012bra vai\u015byatvam and \u015bar\u012bra \u015budratvam. We are not bothered about the physical gender.  Now what is the svabh\u0101va stritvam? It refers to an overwhelming emotional  personality, which obstructs the rational thinking; a personality in whom emotions dominates over reason; man\u014dmaya k\u014d\u015ba dominates over vij\u00f1\u0101namaya k\u014d\u015ba; because according to \u015b\u0101stra, vij\u00f1\u0101namaya k\u014d\u015ba or rational thinking, should have control over over emotion. If emotions are going to control over reason, that person is an emotional person. And such an emotional personality will have lot of problem with Vedantic knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is primary problem? An emotional personality always values personal relationships and attachment. It wants to be personally associated with someone,  and personally someone should love me; there must be someone whom I can tell: I love you; and someone should regularly tell me: I love you; this need of emotional  prop is very important; whereas in V\u0113d\u0101nta, we talk about growing out of sa\u1e45ga or relationship; because we want to come to this knowledge that aham asa\u1e45gam brahm\u0101si; asa\u1e45g\u014dham; asa\u1e45g\u014dham; asa\u1e45g\u014dham puna puna\u1e25;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then vai\u015by\u0101\u1e25; if you remember the fourth chapter analysis, we have defined vai\u015by\u0101 svabh\u0101va as a r\u0101jasic mind; an outgoing mind; which wants to earn, which wants to acquire; which wants to accomplish, which is a commercial mind. So even if it comes  to religion, even if you come to Rishikesh; you will be interested in rudr\u0101k\u1e63a vy\u0101p\u0101ram and conclude that there is a good profit there; it is everywhere profit only;  the commercial mind; that is vai\u015by\u0101 mind; it has nothing to do with j\u0101ti or birth; even a mah\u0101 Br\u0101hma\u1e47\u0101 by birth; if he is commercial minded, he will  come under gu\u1e47a vai\u015by\u0101\u1e25. Here we are not talking about j\u0101ti vai\u015by\u0101\u1e25; we are talking about gu\u1e47a vai\u015by\u0101\u1e25; so gu\u1e47a stri over; gu\u1e47a vai\u015by\u0101\u1e25 over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then what is the third one; \u015budr\u0101\u1e25: \u015budr\u0101\u1e25, we saw in the fourth chapter, as tam\u014d gu\u1e47a pradh\u0101na\u1e25. So one who is given to indolence, laziness; and animalistic living; who has got one philosophy; as we say in Hindi; kao, pio, maja karo; eat drink and be merry. So tamasic mind; very close to animals; so, such a mind again gu\u1e47a udr\u0101\u1e25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even those people who have got certain disadvantages or handicaps, even those people can take to bhakthi and attain liberation. So disadvantaged people also can take to bhakthi and attain liberation. By disadvantage we mean, any type of handicap; physical handicap or emotional handicap, or intellectual handicap; (nothing is understood Swamiji, if you say, it is intellectual handicap) or, environmental handicap or parental handicap; a person born to a parent who is a n\u0101sthika, atheist. Or imagine even a Prahlada who is born to a Hira\u1e47yaka\u015bipu; an asur\u0101, who never has devotion. In fact, he says: never say N\u0101rayana N\u0101m\u0101\u1e25; Hira\u1e47yaka\u015bipave n\u0101m\u0101\u1e25 only you should say: With this n\u0101sthikya disadvantage also, a person through devotion can attain liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
