Surely, O Paartha, even those who are born of sinful origin – women, traders, and also labourers, they attain the supreme state by taking refuge in me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is another milestone shloka that has the potential to be misinterpreted if it is quoted out of context. Here, Shree Krishna states that irrespective of birth, gender, caste, or race, whoever takes complete shelter of Him will attain the supreme goal.  Such is the greatness of the path of devotion that everyone is eligible for it, whereas in other paths there are strict criteria for eligibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the path of j\u00f1\u0101na- yog, Jagadguru Shankaracharya states the eligibility: \u201cOnly those who possess the four qualifications\u2014discrimination, detachment, disciplined mind and senses, and a deep yearning for liberation\u2014are eligible for practicing the path of j\u00f1\u0101na- yog.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the path of karm k\u0101\u1e47\u1e0d (Vedic rituals), there are six conditions to be met: \u201cSix criteria must be fulfilled for the fruition of ritualistic activities\u2014the proper place, the correct time, the exact procedure and correct enunciation of mantras, utilization of pure materials, a qualified Brahmin who performs the yaj\u00f1a, and staunch faith in its efficacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the path of a\u1e63h\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45g- yog as well, there are strict regulations: \u201cPerform ha\u1e6dha- yog in a pure place, while seated immovably in the proper asan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, bhakti-yog is such that it can be done by anyone, at any time, place, and circumstance, and with any material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna also says that women, traders and labourers are born out of \u201cpaapa yoni\u201d which literally means \u201csinful wombs\u201d. He says that women, traders and labourers are also equally qualified to become liberated through the path of devotion. So, to properly understand the meaning, let us look at the historical context and the symbolism that underpins this shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we have seen so far, the Gita attempts to remove misconceptions about spirituality that were prevalent when it came out. One prevalent misconception that was present throughout history was that only the brahmin and the kshatriya communities were solely qualified for liberation. Any other community was termed as \u201csinful\u201d. Therefore, Shri Krishna vehemently refutes this misconception using the language that was prevalent at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now let\u2019s look at the symbolism by focusing on the attributes of the communities mentioned, not by focusing on their birth- given caste or gender. A \u201csinful origin\u201d or \u201csinful womb\u201d per this shloka symbolically refers to a low level of sattva guna, and a high level of rajas and tamas which causes such attachment to worldly matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does that manifest in people? All are not concern with physical body or class of Verna, but it relates to quality of typical kind of people. The quality of being too attached to children and family is termed as \u201cwomen\u201d in this shloka. Similarly, a \u201ctrader\u201d is too attached to money and commerce, and a \u201clabourer\u201d is too attached to the fruits of his own efforts. Unlike other types of spiritual practice that require a high level of detachment, bhakti or devotion does not require such a qualification.Therefore, Shri Krishna praises the path of devotion because anyone who has such deep attachments to worldly matters can attain liberation through devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, when even those with a material attachment can attain liberation through devotion, how do people with a high level of detachment fare? This is covered next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
