With useless desires, useless actions and useless knowledge, the unintelligent take refuge in delusory, devilish and evil nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After following this chapter so far, we may wonder why has Shri Krishna spent so much time in addressing our erroneous notion of Ishvara? He has done so because erroneous knowledge is the start of a chain of consequences that can either uplift or ruin our life, not just from a spiritual but also material perspective. He illustrates that chain in this shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krishna said that there are some people who are very clear who have diagnosed the problem, and they are taking to the right course, but there are many other people who are still groping in darkness. They do not know what exactly they want. They think that this is the goal for some time; and acquire it; and they find that they do not get what they wanted. And then the replaced the goal with another one; again, acquired and no satisfaction; so these people are confused people, Krishna talked about the confused people; unlucky and unfortunate ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These confused people Krishna says they have wrong knowledge, wrong desire, wrong effort and therefore wrong result. Those people who do not have viveka \u1e63akti; whose satva gu\u1e47a is overpowered; they are called vic\u0113tasa\u1e25; avivekina\u1e25. And the problem is we are all avivekis, indiscriminate people; knowing this alone, the scriptures have come to assist us; but because of our intellectual arrogance; neither we will know by ourselves; nor we will expose ourselves to the teaching of the scriptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They all have wrong understanding and expectations; and what are the wrong expectations; everything impermanent is mistaken as permanent; they think power is permanent; position is permanent; people around will be permanent; above all, money think permanent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, Krishna says their actions will be k\u0101ma pradh\u0101na actions; or kr\u014ddha\u1e25 pradh\u0101na actions; either their actions are born out of attachment; or their actions are born out of hatred; so r\u0101k\u1e63as\u012bm and \u0101sur\u012b\u1e41; the difference is: one is r\u0101ga\u1e25, pradh\u0101na; another is dve\u1e63a\u1e25 pradh\u0101na.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider a child born into a family that gives utmost important to the acquisition of money but does not emphasize the ethical means of doing so. Such an erroneous knowledge starts a chain of consequences. The child always desires money, and all his actions are directed towards the pursuit of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna calls these useless desires and useless actions. All of these eventually lead to increasingly worse character traits in the child. He can undertake delusory actions (gambling), evil actions (stealing) or worse yet, devilish actions (murder), all because of the wrong notion that acquisition of money is paramount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broadly, if we start with the erroneous notion that our body and mind is everything and that Ishvara is a distant finite entity, all our desires and actions will be directed towards ensuring that our body can live comfortably. We will continue to make external adjustments such as moving to a new city or changing jobs in search of comfort and security, to continually appease our body and mind, and to gain freedom from sorrow. Since we have not acquired the knowledge of our true nature and Ishvara\u2019s true natures, we will never understand that Ishvara is our ultimate source of security and the ultimate freedom from sorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we have seen that erroneous knowledge about Ishvara can lead to ultimate ruin. Who then, are those people that, having had the correct knowledge, develop the right type of relationhip with Ishvara? This is taken up next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
