Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna describes the workings of Prakriti in this shloka. Prakriti is Ishvara\u2019s projector. It projects an entire universe of names and forms at the beginning of a cycle, withdraws them at the end of the cycle, only to start it all over again. We saw this in the previous shlokas. Here, we investigate the relationship between Prakriti, Ishvara and the individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s first look at the relationship between Ishvara and Prakriti. Shri Krishna says that Ishvara fully controls Prakriti. He is the commander of Prakriti. Prakriti cannot do anything without the command of Ishvara. However, Ishvara is not a micro- manager. He does not tell Prakriti how to do its job. He just sets the rules in motion. Prakriti is a system that follows the rules, just like a computer program or the autopilot in an aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does this work? We know that Prakriti, which is a synonym for maaya, comprises the three gunaas or modes. Each guna will deliver results based on its inherent property. For example, if our personality is predominantly comprised of rajas, we will always be in an agitated state, which will result in haphazard work. But if our personality is saatvic, it will result in perfect work. Notice that there is no need for Ishvara to \u201cdo\u201d anything since Prakriti is an automatic system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, all the souls within the material creation also go and rest in the body of God, in a state of suspended animation.  Their gross and subtle bodies merge back into the source, Maya.  However, the causal body still remains.  (The three kinds of bodies have been described in detail in the commentary to verse 2.28)  After dissolution, when God creates the world again, the material energy unwinds in the reverse sequence prak\u1e5biti\u2014 mah\u0101n- ahank\u0101r\u2014 pa\u00f1ch tanm\u0101tr\u0101\u2014 pa\u00f1ch mah\u0101bh\u016bta.  Then, the souls that were lying in a state of suspended animation with only causal bodies are again placed in the world.  In accordance with their causal bodies, they again receive subtle and gross bodies, and the various life forms are created in the universe.  These life forms vary in nature amongst the different planes of existence.  In some planetary systems, fire is the dominant element in the body, just as in the earth plane, the dominant bodily elements are earth and water.  Hence, the bodies vary in their subtleness and the functions they can perform.  Shree Krishna thus calls them myriad life forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a cyclic process I repeatedly create this world. So that is why very important. In V\u0113d\u0101nta, creation is a cyclic process; it is not a linear process. V\u0113d\u0101nta we say creation is a eternal cycle; manifest and unmanifest, manifest unmanifest and cycle does not have a beginning or end; a line has a beginning and end point, a circle does not have a beginning or end; and therefore never ask the question; when did the creation begin. Therefore the question; when did the creation originate, is illogical and therefore Krishna says, it has been on and on and on and on and on so aham puna\u1e25 puna\u1e25 vis\u1e5bj\u0101mi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, let us look at the nature of Prakriti and the individual. Shri Krishna says that the individual is under the complete control of Prakriti. He helplessly goes through infinite cycles of birth and death due to the influence of Prakriti. In our own lives, we know so many people that are hale and hearty one moment and are killed by an accident in the next moment. They have no say in the matter whatsoever. The only way one can get out of Prakriti\u2019s influence is to put forth effort towards achieving liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cannot dream. For dream to come I require what; some imprint in the mind is required. Similarly, Brahman cannot create; unless the creation is there in potential form; that potential form is called prakr\u0325ti. It is like the big wheel; giant wheel; it is switched on; it will go on and on; you cannot stop the giant wheel; but you can jump out of it; that is called m\u014dk\u1e63a. There is no switch off; no off switch; it will be going on; only you jump out. How we shall in forthcoming chapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, we know that Ishvara commands Prakriti to perform creation, sustenance and dissolution. In the chapter on karma yoga, we have seen that actions have a tendency to bind us, to make us get attached to them. Does Ishvara get attached to the actions of creation, sustenance and dissolution? We shall see in the next shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
