Before the topic is taken up, Shri Krishna introduces some words here as a way of introduction. The new words introduced here are sahastra and yuga. Although not mentioned explicitly, we shall also look at the four yugas or ages that are part of the cosmic creation: satya yuga, treta yuga, dvaapara yuga and kali yuga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vedic cosmological system has measurements of time that are vast and astounding. Consider this example of an insect, that is, born at night and within the same night it grows, procreates, lays eggs, and grows old. The next morning, you find it dead under the streetlight. If one tells that insect that its entire lifespan was only equal to one night of a human, that will be unbelievable for the insect. Similarly, the measurements of time given in the Vedas are beyond normal human imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vedas state that one year on the earth equals; one day and night of Indra and other celestial gods. Thus, one year of the celestial gods consisting of 12 x 30 days equals 360 years on the earth plane. The calculation goes much further; 12,000 years of the celestial gods makes one mah\u0101 yug (cycle of four yugas) on the earth plane, that is, 4.32 million years. Following is the Vedic calculation of time periods or yugas on the earth plane:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kali Yug: 432,000 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dw\u0101par Yug: 864,000 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tret\u0101 Yug: 1,296,000 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satya Yug: 1,728,000 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mah\u0101 Yug: 4,320,000 years (Adding the four yugas)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kalp: 4,320,000,000 years (1000 Mah\u0101 Yug = 1 day of Brahma)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, having understood the length of chatur yuga, we can calculate the length of Brahma\u2019s day and night. Shri Krishna says that one day of Lord Brahma equals one thousand yugaas. The interpretation of the word yuga here is traditionally taken to mean a chatur- yuga. So then, a day of Brahma equals one thousand times 4.32 million, which is 4.32 billion years. This is also the length of one night of Lord Brahma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now what is the present age of Brahm\u0101ji. In all the sa\u1e45kalpa we say: Brahm\u0101ji is running 51st year. He is more than 50 years; One hair must have turned grey;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brahmana\u1e25 par\u0101rdvaya k\u0101l\u0113, par\u0101rdham means 50 years; Brahm\u0101ji has got par\u0101rda dvayam means, two fifty years, can he say 2 fifty years he has got; and now dvithiya parardhe; and this the first day of the 51st years; and on the first day he has got&nbsp; 2000 years; and this is the 27 or 28th chaturyug\u0101; ashtavimsati tame, kaliyuge; in the 2000 chaturyug\u0101s, 28th chaturyug\u0101 is over. Now you can calculate how many chaturyug\u0101s more he has to cross; to reach the total; Of these 2000 chaturyug\u0101s; 1000 chaturyug\u0101 Brahm\u0101ji keeps awake; and another 1000 chaturyug\u0101 is asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us know dig deeper into the symbolic meaning of this shloka. There are two aspects we need to look at. First, this shloka re-emphasizes that every action we perform always bears fruit, but not necessarily in the current lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We may try and try very hard, but the result of our action may not show up in this lifetime, it may bear fruit in another lifetime. Alternatively, we may sometimes get into situations that we think we do not deserve. These could be favourable situations (an unexpected financial windfall) or unfavourable situations (a natural disaster). These types of results are due to actions we have performed in a prior lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second aspect is to do with the cultivation of dispassion or vairagya towards this world. We perform actions in this world not just for immediate gain, but also to leave behind a legacy, leave behind something that future generations will remember us by. It could be wealth, power, prestige and so on. But in effect, Shri Krishna tells us that nothing will last forever. Everything will eventually end, if not now then certainly in 4.32 billion years. So, if this is going to be the case, it is better to cultivate dispassion right now so that we can proceed spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brhaman and brhama both are different identities. Brahaman is nirgun, ultimate goal or supreme power. Brahma is also a soul, who has reached tremendously elevated consciousness. Thus, God has given him the position of Brahma, to discharge the duties as a creator on God\u2019s behalf. But like all other living creatures, Brahma is also under the cycle of life and death. However, at the end of his tenure, he is liberated and goes to the Abode of God. Sometimes, at the creation of the world, when God does not find any eligible souls for the position of Brahma, God Himself becomes Brahma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How exactly does the universe come into being and dissolve?
