Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

O Arjuna, all worlds including the abode of Brahma (are subject to) return. But having obtained me, O Kaunteya, rebirth does not occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the scriptures, there exist heavens or worlds subtler than our visible universe. All beings on this earth who perform meritorious deeds go to one of those heavens after death. The abode of Lord Brahma (Brahma- loka) is considered the highest among the heavens. Shri Krishna says that all beings who end up in these heavens, including the world of Lord Brahma, do not stay there permanently. They have to return to earth at some point. Only those who attain Ishvara gain permanent liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Vedic scriptures, there are fourteen worlds in our universe. Seven planes of existence beginning with earth and higher \u2014bh\u016b\u1e25, bhuva\u1e25, swa\u1e25, maha\u1e25, jana\u1e25, tapa\u1e25, satya\u1e25. The higher planes are the celestial abodes called the Swarga. The remaining seven planes that are lower than earth are the hellish abodes called narak. These are \u2014tal, atal, vital, sutal, tal\u0101tal, ras\u0101tal, p\u0101t\u0101l. Similar references are made by other religions as well. Islam mentions the seventh sky or the s\u0101tv\u0101\u00f1 \u0101sm\u0101n as the highest of the seven heavens. The Talmud, the book of Jewish law and theology, has also enumerated seven heavens, the highest being Araboth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These fourteen planes of existence are called the lokas or various worlds of our universe. The satya\u1e25 lok, also known as Brahma Lok, the abode of Brahma is the highest among them, and p\u0101t\u0101l lok is the lowest. However, all these lokas are under the realm of Maya, the material energy of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, he says: Hey Arjuna, all the 14 l\u014dk\u0101s, exist within time and space. There is only one thing which is beyond time and space, which is \u012a\u015bvara\u1e25; otherwise called Brahman in v\u0113d\u0101ntic language; he will talk about that later. There is only one thing, which is unlocated; whereas the other l\u014dk\u0101s are within time and space, that is why you have to travel to reach them. So the very fact that you have to travel indicates that it is not available here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what about brahma l\u014dk\u0101? He says up to brahma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

l\u014dk\u0101, even Brahmaji is not permanent. Even Brahm\u0101ji, the creator is not permanent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first half of the shloka is applicable to seekers who perform karma yoga diligently and worship Ishvara as well. Depending upon the sincerity of their deeds and worship, they will attain the appropriate heaven. A select few attain the abode of Lord Brahma which is the highest possible heaven. Here, it is said that the residents only enjoy pleasure. There is no sorrow or suffering whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once they attain the abode of Lord Brahma, they are faced with a choice. They can continue to remain interested in pleasure seeking or attain liberation. Attainment of Ishvara is the same as liberation. If they continue to remain interested in pleasure seeking, if they think of Brahma loka as yet another realm of space and time, they will eventually come back to earth and start life all over again. If they are interested in liberation, they will attain it when Brahma loka is dissolved along with all of the other worlds. This kind of liberation is called \u201ckrama mukti\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
