Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who strive for liberation from old age and death seeking my refuge, they know \u201cbrahman\u201d as well as \u201cadhyaatma\u201d and \u201ckarma\u201d completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Birth, death, old age and diseases affect this material body, but not the spiritual body. There is no birth, death, old age and disease for the spiritual body, so one who attains a spiritual body, becomes one of the associates of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and engages in eternal devotional service is really liberated. Aham brahmasmi<\/strong>: I am spirit. It is said that one should understand that he is Brahman, spirit soul. This Brahman conception of life is also in devotional service, as described in this verse. The pure devotees are transcendentally situated on the Brahman platform, and they know everything about transcendental activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a prelude to the eighth chapter, Shri Krishna introduces a series of technical terms that a devotee needs to know the meaning of in order to gain access to Ishvara. The terms are listed in this shloka and the next shloka, whereas the meaning of the terms is explained in the beginning of the eighth chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who exactly is this devotee? Shri Krishna says that it is that devotee who is striving. In other words, he is performing karma yoga for purification of his mind and intellect and has become ready for meditation. But this devotee is not driven by blind faith. He is a jnani or wise devotee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although some spiritual seekers consider \u0101tma-j\u00f1\u0101na, or knowledge of the self, as the ultimate goal of human birth, it is only a tiny drop in the ocean of knowledge, which is brahma-j\u00f1\u0101na or the knowledge of God. By just knowing a drop, one cannot understand the enormity, depth, or prowess of the ocean. Therefore, \u0101tma-j\u00f1\u0101na cannot be in any way equal to brahma- j\u00f1\u0101na. However, it can be a starting point toward the absolute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shree Krishna states that those who take His shelter are liberated from the cycle of birth and death forever. And by His divine grace, they receive brahma-j\u00f1\u0101na or knowledge of the Brahman, \u0101tma-j\u00f1\u0101na or knowledge of the self and the entire field of karmic action or the divine laws of karma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So now, what should the wise devotee have knowledge of? Three technical terms are mentioned in this shloka: brahman, adhyaatma and karma. Some more terms will be added in the next and last shloka of the seventh chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
