Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know those beings who used to exist, who exist now, and who will exist in the future, O Arjuna, but no one knows me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here the question of personality and impersonality is clearly stated. If Krishna, the form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, were maya, material, as the impersonalises consider Him to be, then like the living entity He would change His body and forget everything about His past life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone with a material body cannot remember his past life, nor can he foretell his future life, nor can he predict the outcome of his present life; therefore he cannot know what is happening in past, present and future. Unless one is liberated from material contamination, he cannot know past, present and future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shree Krishna says that He has the knowledge of everything, the past, present, and the future. However, with our finite intellect, we cannot know the Almighty God. His infinite glory, splendours, energies, qualities, and extent are beyond the comprehension of our inadequate intellect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the ordinary human being, Lord Krishna clearly says that He completely knows what happened in the past, what is happening in the present, and what will happen in the future. In the Fourth Chapter we have seen that Lord Krishna remembers instructing Vivasvan, the sun- God, millions of years ago. Krishna knows every living entity because He is situated in every living being’s heart as the Super soul. But despite His presence in every living entity as Super soul and His presence as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the less intelligent, even if able to realize the impersonal Brahman, cannot realize Sri Krishna as the Supreme Person. Certainly, the transcendental body of Sri Krishna is not perishable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In continuing the topic of maaya, Shri Krishna makes it very clear that maaya or the limitations of space and time do not have any impact on Ishvara. He says that Ishvara does not identify with any one form, therefore he has knowledge of all forms in the past, present or future. In other words, Ishvara transcends time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Earlier, Shri Krishna had said that Ishvara is like a string that goes through all the beads in a necklace, which is a poetic way of saying that Ishvara is beyond space. So therefore, we can conclude that Ishvara is beyond space and time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vedic scriptures state:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGod is all-knowing and omniscient. His austerity consists of knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGod is beyond the scope of our intellectual logic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGod cannot be described in words, nor can our mind comprehend Him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGod cannot be analysed by arguments or formulated by words, mind, and intellect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking at it differently, we who inhabit the world of three dimensions cannot understand the dimensionless Ishvara. When viewing a live broadcast, we are conscious of the time aspect because we cannot know how the broadcast will end. But if we are viewing a recorded program, we have the ability to go backwards and forwards in time and see all the events regardless of when they took place. Time as a concept ceases to exist if we have that ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, from Ishvara\u2019s standpoint, there is no such thing as the past, present or future, because the concept of time does not exist for him. That is how he can have knowledge of everyone that was alive, is alive and will be alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the implication for us? The only way to know Ishvara completely is to surrender to him and take refuge in him. This means knowing that we do not have an independent existence or power apart from Ishvara. We need to lose our identity in Ishvara, become one with Ishvara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only God knows Himself. However, if He finds some eligible soul, He bestows His grace upon that fortunate soul, and then with God\u2019s divine intellect, the soul gets to know God. Therefore, only by God\u2019s grace one can know God. Our material intellect does not have the capacity to know Him otherwise. The concept of God\u2019s grace is discussed again in detail in 10.11 and 18.56.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, if we know that Ishvara alone is the truth, that alone is going to give infinite happiness, why don\u2019t we really strive to know that, Ishvara? Why is it that we get stuck here and there? This is answered in the next shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
