And indeed, all saatvik qualities, and all raajasic and taamsic qualities, know those to be only from me. Know that I am not in them, but they are in me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna began this chapter by indicating that Ishvara is the essence of everything. He also provided a short list containing tangible examples of his glories, which he concluded in the previous shloka. In this shloka, he summarizes this point by saying that the three fundamental aspects of prakriti or nature arise from Ishvara but are subservient to Ishvara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krishna points out not only the external world, even the internal world of thoughts is a product of the Lord alone. Therefore, he says: bh\u0101v\u0101\u1e25 which means antakara\u1e47a pari\u1e47\u0101m\u0101\u1e25; the inner world of thoughts; inner world of v\u1e5bittihi; are called here bh\u0101v\u0101\u1e25; citta pari\u1e47\u0101m\u0101\u1e25; and these thoughts are also a product of \u012a\u015bvara only and according to the scriptures, even thoughts are inert by themselves; but they appear to be sentient; because of the pervasion of par\u0101 prak\u1e5bti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And therefore, in the mind there are two parts; one part is the changing thought; and the other part is the changeless consciousness; the consciousness part belongs to par\u0101 prak\u1e5bti; the changing thoughts belongs to the apar\u0101 prak\u1e5bti. But the problem is the thought and consciousness are so intimately intertwined that we are not able to discriminate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Pa\u00f1cada\u015bi, Vidy\u0101ra\u1e47ya compares thoughts to greatest dancer of the world; how the dancer violently (not violently) moves the hands and legs so fast; similarly the mind assumes thoughts after thoughts; the thoughts are varying but there is one thing which is not varying at all; what is that?; I am conscious of your first sentence; conscious of your second sentence; conscious of your third sentence; conscious, conscious, conscious, \u2026\u2026 no sentence; and even when the mind is blank without thoughts, I am conscious of what; the blankness of the mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, what is continuously and changelessly present; the consciousness is present which is called par\u0101 prak\u1e5bti; because whatever does not change is par\u0101 prak\u1e5bti; and what is apar\u0101 prak\u1e5bti; whatever changes is apar\u0101 prak\u1e5bti and what is changing. Thoughts: and Krishna says Arjuna, every thought that rises in your mind is my own apar\u0101 prak\u1e5bti; and then we saw before that par\u0101 prak\u1e5bti is nirgu\u1e47am and apar\u0101 prak\u1e5bti is sagu\u1e47am; and this apar\u0101 prak\u1e5bti is supposed to have three gu\u1e47as; satva, rajas and tamas. satva standing for knowledge faculty; and rajas standing for dynamism or activity; and tamas standing for dullness or delusion. So, knowledge, activity, and delusion, satva, rajas and tamas, are three gu\u1e47as belonging to apar\u0101 prak\u1e5bti; and now the thoughts which are products of apar\u0101 prak\u1e5bti, they also will have three gu\u1e47as.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sattva, rajas and tamas are the three aspects of prakriti or nature. A more detailed explanation of these three gunaas or aspects is provided in the 18th chapter. At the internal level, these aspects are the moods of our mind. A taamasic mind is dull, a raajasic mind is active and a saatvic mind is serene. Moreover, a saatvic object or thought is tied to knowledge, a raajasic object or thought is tied to activity and a taamasic thought or object is tied to ignorance, sloth or procrastination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We see all these three aspects in our personality. The body is taamasic. It likes to be in stasis, it does not like to move. A lot of energy is required to move our bodies. Our limbs and our praanas or physiological processes are raajasic because they embody action and movement. Our mind and intellect are saatvic because they embody knowledge. Later in the Gita, Shri Krishna will classify everything, including desire and faith, into these three classications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, all three aspects of prakriti cannot exist by themselves. Nothing can exist without a base or a support. Shri Krishna says that it is Ishvara who provides existence to these three aspects of prakriti. However, he qualifies that statement by pointing out that they are in Ishvara, but Ishvara is not in them. In other words, Ishvara can exist without the gunaas, but the gunaas cannot exist without Ishvara because they need his support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the implication of this statement? Every object, person, or situation that we encounter in this universe is comprised of a permutation of the three gunaas. All three gunaas are supported by Ishvara. Therefore, Ishvara is everywhere, behind every object, person and situation in this universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So then, what prevents us from knowing Ishvara? Shri Krishna covers this topic next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
