I am the taste in water, O Kaunteya. I am the light of the sun and moon, Om in all the Vedas, sound in space, valour in men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any attitudinal change is based on understanding. Krishna wants us not only to understand this fact, but Krishna wants our attitude also to change accordingly. Attitude is based on knowledge. As you understand the world, so you entertain the attitude and as your understanding of the world undergoes a change, correspondingly there should be an attitudinal change also. when I understand the world as visvar\u016bpa, the manifestation of God, then what is my attitude, reverence. In fact, the basic teaching of Hinduism is reverence to the creation, as manifestation of God. In fact you can spend your whole life to develop this reverence, Hinduism has fulfilled; you see all the prayers; Rudram which is supposed to be one of the most potent beautiful prayers. What is Rudram; many people think that Rudram has the highest philosophy; No; Rudram is only visvar\u016bpa dar\u015banam. If you read the translation of Rudram, very interesting; you will find I do namask\u0101ra to Lord \u015aiva, who is in the form of Mud; mudd\u0101ya nama\u1e25; who is in the form of leaf; that also two leaf; dry leaf; who is fresh leaf also; you will find that everything in the creation is enumerated, and we are asked to look at everything reverentially; world as world will cause sams\u0101ra; but the very same world as \u012a\u015bvara will not cause any sams\u0101ra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, in this chapter, where we learn to channel our thoughts towards a single ideal, which is Ishvara. Ishvara is in everything, and everything is in Ishvara – these statements were proclaimed by Shri Krishna previously. Even if we intellectually understand Ishvara as the ultimate cause, our senses do not literally \u201csee\u201d Ishvara. So then, how do we learn to remember Ishvara at all times?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna helps us in this regard by giving us a list of Ishvara\u2019s vibhootis or glories. He recognizes that our mind tends to see wonder and glory in some aspects of the universe. If we can train ourselves to remember Ishvara whenever we see his glories, it will help us advance towards our goal of learning to see Ishvara everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first example of Ishvara\u2019s vibooti is the taste in water. Water is an important part of everyone\u2019s life. Over 60% of our body is made up of water. Shri Krishna says that Ishvara is the taste or essence of water. In other words, Ishvara is what makes water behave like water. So whenever we have a glass of water when we are extremely thirsty, it is Ishvara that is refreshing us. This is a wonderful meditation that we can practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever tried putting a solid food item, on your dry tongue? Do you get any taste? Only when the saliva in our mouth dissolves some part of the solid, we start getting the taste as perceived by the taste buds on our tongue. After all, who can separate the taste of water from water? That is why Shree Krishna says that he is the taste in water. It is the intrinsic property of water to carry the taste of all substances; without water, there will be no taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, whenever we are dazzled by the brilliance of the sun, or the soothing light of the moon, we should remember that it is Ishvara that is providing the brightness or the effulgence. Whenever we hear a sound, we should know that it is Ishvara that provides the ability for sound to travel through air. Moreover, when we read stories about people who selflessly protect their country or their fellow human beings, we should remember that it is Ishvara that provides valour to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same way, \u0101k\u0101\u015bha (space) acts as the vehicle for sound. Different languages form due to sound modifications. Shree Krishna says He is the origin of it all, as the sound in space is His energy. He is the syllable Om the most important sound in the Vedic mantras. The sun and the moon get their radiance from Him. Even for all the abilities that manifest in humans, He is the ultimate energy source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meditation on the word \u201cOm\u201d is considered one of the highest meditations possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
