In this shloka, he gives us the objective of meditation. In other words, this shloka tells us what one comes to know in the state of meditation. This shloka is a preview of the topic covered in the seventh chapter to the twelfth chapter, which is the elaboration of Ishvara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ascetic s\u0101dhan\u0101, explained in the previous two verses, can lead to \u0101tma j\u00f1\u0101na (knowledge of the self).&nbsp; But brahma j\u00f1\u0101na (knowledge of God) requires the grace of God, which comes through devotion. The words sarva loka mahe\u015bhwaram mean \u201cSovereign Lord of all the worlds,\u201d and suh\u1e5bida\u1e41 sarva- bh\u016bt\u0101n\u0101\u1e41 means \u201cbenevolent well- wisher of all living beings.\u201d&nbsp; In this way, He emphasizes that the ascetic path too is consummated in surrender to God, with the knowledge that the Supreme Lord is the enjoyer of all austerities and sacrifices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of meditation is to realize the eternal essence. It is akin to a wave that realizes its identity with water. In this manner, the wave realizes that it is no longer the finite entity that it once was. It is one wave but also it is many waves. It is the entire ocean. Similarly, once the meditator realizes oneness with brahman or the eternal essence (water) , he attains Ishvara (ocean).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, one should withdraw all the sense organs from the external world; indriya means senses; mana\u1e25 means mind; buddhihi means intellect are these withdrawn from the external world and get rid of all the emotional disturbances, desire, fear and anger and your mind is turned towards only one thing i.e. meditate upon the Lord. Who is the receiver of all the poojas, who is the object of worship, yaj\u00f1\u0101 and tapas and who is the ultimate Lord of the entire creation And who is located in the hridayam of all the beings. He will attain peace of mind; he will attain both j\u012bvan mukti and vid\u0113ha mukti, this is the nutshell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who exactly is Ishvara is covered in the chapters seven through twelve. Only few of his attributes are covered here. First, he is the cosmic enjoyer or the cosmic recipient. Any work that is performed for the welfare of society is automatically dedicated to Ishvara. This was the theme of the third chapter on karmayoga where we are advised to act in a selfless manner, and dedicate the results of our actions to a higher ideal. Ishvara is the highest ideal possible because he encompasses the entire cosmos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, Ishvara is called the controller of all beings. Through prakriti or maaya, Ishvara manifests as the laws or rules by which our lives as well as the lives of plants, animals and inert objects are governed. We saw earlier that the universe functions through inherent laws such as gravity and electromagnetism. In that regard, Ishvara through these laws controls us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Fifth Chapter is a practical explanation of Krishna consciousness, generally known as karma- yoga. The question of mental speculation as to how karma- yoga can give liberation is answered herewith. To work in Krishna consciousness is to work with the complete knowledge of the Lord as the predominator. Such work is not different from transcendental knowledge. Direct Krishna consciousness is bhakti- yoga, and jnana- yoga is a path leading to bhakti- yoga. Krishna consciousness means to work in full knowledge of one&#8217;s relationship with the Supreme Absolute, and the perfection of this consciousness is full knowledge of Krishna, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead. A pure soul is the eternal servant of God as His fragmental part and parcel. He comes into contact with maya (illusion) due to the desire to lord it over maya, and that is the cause of his many sufferings. As long as he is in contact with matter, he has to execute work in terms of material necessities. Krishna consciousness, however, brings one into spiritual life even while one is within the jurisdiction of matter, for it is an arousing of spiritual existence by practice in the material world. The more one is advanced, the more he is freed from the clutches of matter. The Lord is not partial toward anyone. Everything depends on one&#8217;s practical performance of duties in Krishna consciousness, which helps one control the senses in every respect and conquer the influence of desire and anger. And one who stands fast in Krishna consciousness, controlling the abovementioned passions, remains factually in the transcendental stage, or brahma-nirvana. The eightfold yoga mysticism is automatically practiced in Krishna consciousness because the ultimate purpose is served. There is a gradual process of elevation in the practice of yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi. But these only preface perfection by devotional service, which alone can award peace to the human being. It is the highest perfection of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Ishvara&#8217;s laws are fair. They treat everyone equally. They work without any expectation or ulterior motive. They also work non-stop, just like our heart beats and our breath functions all the time. In this manner, Ishvara is the highest well-wisher and friend of all beings. If we too make friends with Ishvara, which is another way of saying that we work in the best interest of the world, we do not have to worry about our well-being. Ishvara takes care of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So therefore, one who comes to know the eternal essence, and realizes his unity with Ishvara during meditation, attains peace.
