Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither agency nor actions, in this world, are created by the eternal essence, and neither does it connect actions to results; for nature organizes all this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Shri Krishna provided the example of the dweller in the city to illustrate the distinction between the eternal essence and the body, mind and intellect. In this shloka, he takes us one step further by saying that the eternal essence is beyond the realm of action. Furthermore, since action implies doership, results and their enjoyership, action and everything that comes with it is in the realm of prakriti or nature. The eternal essence is separate and distinct from action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renunciation of the sense of doership is the responsibility of the soul.  The body is constituted of the three modes of material nature consists of the three modes-goodness, passion and ignorance. When the living entity comes in contact with nature, he becomes conditioned by these modes.  But out of ignorance, the soul identifies with the body and becomes implicated as the doer of actions, which are in fact done by material nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any self-contained system has inherent rules which govern its operations. For example, let us consider the Pac-Man video game. The game is played in a computer that has four buttons which are used to move Pac-Man up or down or left or right. The rules of the game are programmed into the system. If the player manages to get the fruit while evading the monsters, he wins the game. All this happens automatically. It does not require external intervention by any divine or human entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if we take a step back, the Pac-Man character does not really “move” anywhere. It is an illusion created by the computer by projecting the Pac-Man image to different parts of the screen. One who is watching the game very objectively knows that there is no movement of left, right etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, one who sees the world from the absolute standpoint of the eternal essence knows that in reality, there is no action. Action only exists from the standpoint of nature or prakriti. And if action only exists in nature, so does doer ship, enjoyer ship, and connection of actions to their results. It is a self-governing automatic system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krishna explain in the 2nd line; there we will see; the doership is not created by \u0101tma; even the objects of action, the \u0101tma does not produce; \u0101tma does not produce the karta; \u0101tma does not produce the karma and  \u0101tma does not produce the interaction between karta and karma phalam; it does not produce karta; it does not produce karma, it does not produce karma phalam; and it does not produce the interaction or association between kart\u0101 and karma phalam. In short, \u0101tma does not do anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OK; if \u0101tma does not do anything, how come all these are doing actions, who is responsible for all these actions. Krishna says it is the innate nature of the body to be active, it is the innate nature of the mind to be active \u0101tma does not do exactly like electricity blesses all the gadgets generally; electricity does not ask the radio to produce sound; electricity does not ask the fan to rotate; electricity blesses all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly here also, the mind does its activities the senses do their activities; the body does its activities atma is only a witness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
