Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never do I perform any action – in this manner asserts the one established in yoga, who has realized the eternal essence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In prior shlokas, we learned that one who has realized the eternal essence understands that he is not the enjoyer and doer. So to make this as explicit as possible, Shri Krishna provided a detailed illustration of that teaching in this shloka. Here, he gives a comprehensive list of all activities performed by the body, mind and intellect. By providing this illustration, Shri Krishna demonstrates that one who has realized the eternal essence knows, in fact asserts, that he is not doing anything, and all these activities are happening automatically through the body, mind and intellect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person in is pure in his existence, and consequently he has nothing to do with any work which depends upon five immediate and remote causes: the doer, the work, the situation, the endeavor and fortune. This is because he is engaged in the loving transcendental service of Krishna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although he appears to be acting with his body and senses, he is always conscious of his actual position, which is spiritual engagement. In material consciousness, the senses are engaged in sense gratification, but in  consciousness the senses are engaged in the satisfaction of Krishna’s senses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whenever we accomplish anything substantial, we are overcome with the pride that we have done something great.  The pride of being the doer of one\u2019s actions is a stumbling block to rising beyond material consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need not acquire love; because the innate nature of everyone is love; innate nature of everyone is compassion; but now the love and compassion are suppressed because of selfishness, which is due to abhimana; when the abhimana goes away; he does not acquire; but already available love and compassion gets thrown out; just manifested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, the conscious person is always free, even though he appears to be engaged in affairs of the senses. Activities such as seeing and hearing are actions of the senses meant for receiving knowledge, whereas moving, speaking, evacuating, etc., are actions of the senses meant for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is never affected by the actions of the senses. He cannot perform any act except in the service of the Lord because he knows that he is the eternal servitor of the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having looked at this list of activities, we say  – yes we understand that blinking, hearing, dreaming and so on is automatic. But what about the process of thinking? Shri Krishna says that even the process of thought also happens automatically. Till such time as the ego is sublimated, it drives our mind to generate selfish thoughts. As the ego gets sublimated through karma yoga, selfish thoughts slowly transition to selfless ones. But the self , or the “I”, is just the witness of all these actions for one who has realized the eternal essence. Till then, the “I” thinks that it is the doer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And how does love and compassion express itself; it expresses itself in the form of action, which is required. If he is surrounded by poor people who require the help, food, clothing, etc. he will provide that; if those things are already there; but their needs is knowledge, he will provide the knowledge; so if money is required, whatever money he gets he will give; food is required; whatever is required he will give; everything is there; but ignorance is there; solid in the society; what will he give; he will give knowledge and therefore, he allows his body- mind- complex to function according to the requirement, and all those actions will be dharmic actions. Because actions become adharmic because of deha abhimana; once deha abhimana is gone, any action will be dharmic only; because when selfishness is not there; his identification will be with what, the entire world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because we all got a notion that a jnani must be different from other people; some difference must be there!; some physical difference we expect; or some kind of language difference we expect, or all the time sitting with closed eyes, etc. he should be looking up we expect; or he should be laughing to himself, looking up, etc. and we have got all kinds of funny notions; and if anybody is very normal like other people, this person cannot be a jnani, because he is eating with his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only one who has realized the vision of the eternal essence truly knows that he is not the doer. What then, should be the vision of the karmayogi who wants to ultimately have this vision? This topic is tackled in the next shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
