Shree Bhagavaan said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both renunciation of action and the yoga of action confer ultimate bliss. But, between the two, the yoga of action is superior than renunciation of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna, the teacher, replies to Arjuna’s question by saying that for someone with Arjuna’s proclivity, karma yoga or the yoga of action is a better path than karma sannyaasa or the renunciation of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this verse, Shree Krishna compares karm sanyas and karm-yog.  It is a very deep verse; so let\u2019s understand it one word at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A karm yogi is one who does both, spiritual and social, duties.  Social duties are done with the body while the mind is attached to God.  Jagadguru Kripaluji Maharaj states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDear one!  Think always that all your actions are being observed by God and Guru.\u201d  This is the sadhana of karm-yog, by which we gradually elevate ourselves from bodily consciousness to spiritual consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karm sanyas is for elevated souls, who have already risen beyond the bodily platform.  A karm sanyasi is one who discards social duties due to complete absorption in God, and engages entirely in the performance of spiritual duties (devotional service to God).  This sentiment of karm sanyas was nicely expressed by Lakshman, when Lord Ram asked him to fulfill his worldly duties:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lakshman said to Ram, \u201cYou are my Master, Father, Mother, Friend, and everything.  I will only fulfill my duty toward You with all my might.  So please do not tell me about any of my bodily duties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By making this statement, Shri Krishna reiterates the teaching imparted to Arjuna in the beginning of the second chapter, when Arjuna had asked a similar question. Shri Krishna throughout the Gita has stressed that we can attain self- realization while staying in the world and performing our duties. Like Arjuna, we often get tempted to renounce the world, especially when we are going through a tough time in our life. But as we have seen earlier, if we retreat from the world but have not fully addressed our ego and our selfish desires, we will still be thinking about the material world in the confines of the cave or the ashram we have retreated into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, having taken into account Arjuna’s mental make-up, knowing fully well that like us, Arjuna still had a lot of desires, Shri Krishna deemed that karma yoga was the right path for Arjuna, and that he was not well- suited to becoming a monk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in this verse, Shree Krishna extols karm-yog beyond karm sanyas and recommends it to Arjun as the preferred path.  This is because karm sanyasis are exposed to a danger.  If, having renounced their duties they cannot absorb their mind in God, they are left neither here nor there.  In India, there are tens of thousands of such sadhus, who felt they were detached and thus, renounced the world, but their mind was not yet attached to God.  Consequently, they could not experience the divine bliss of the spiritual path.  And so, although wearing the saffron clothes of mendicants, they indulge in grossly sinful activities such as smoking opium.  Only the ignorant mistake their sloth as detachment from the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there is second part of teaching also with regard to the lifestyle; because a person can lead two types of lifestyles; one is life of activity in society; and the other is life of seclusion; withdrawal; pravr\u0325tti or nivr\u0325tti\u1e25; life of work or life of withdrawal. Life in society or life in seclusion. So life of activity is called grihastha a\u015brama; and life of withdrawal is called sanyasa a\u015brama; thus there are two a\u015bramas open to every human being; in fact, in the olden days, after gurukula vasa for 15-20 years, for every individual both a\u015bramas are open, one can either get married and take to grihastha a\u015brama or one can take to sany\u0101sa and take to a life of seclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what is Krishna is saying: Take to any a\u015brama, but go through svadharma. And following svadharma is called karma yoga and by following svadharma what will happen, you will smoothly come to jnana yoga; and once you are ready for jnana yoga; Krishna says both grihastha and sanyasi should come to jnana y\u014dga, which is v\u0113d\u0101nta vic\u0101ra\u1e25; self-enquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So first Krishna points out that both a\u015bramas are equally good; because as far as plus and minus points are concerned, every a\u015brama has got its own plus and minuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if both are equal, then you cannot talk about inferiority or superiority, but still one thing is possible; what is that? With regard to a particular person and the mental make up, we can say for this particular person this \u0101\u015brama is safer; for the other particular person, this \u0101\u015brama is more conducive; like asking whether science group is better, economic group or biology group is better or home science is better or nutrition is better; all sciences are equally good; but we can ask the question for me, which is better; for some people mathematics, will not come at any cost; for others history; or some other thing, literature or something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he says better choice, not better choice for all; for majority of the people and that is why we say Gita is meant for the general public. Whereas the upanisads always addresses the mature people and therefore you will find upanishad always glorify sanyasa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, does the follower of karma yoga attain the same result that the follower of renunciation attains? He addressed this point in the upcoming shlokas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
